What We're Looking For
This role is specifically for students participating in the Northeastern University co-op program and is a full-time (40 hours/week), 6-month opportunity aligned to the July–December co-op cycle.
Candidates must be based in the Boston area. While Function Health is a fully remote company, this role includes one week of in-person onboarding in Boston, followed by monthly in-person meetups for the duration of the program.
Function Health is building the most comprehensive health platform on the planet. The Engineering Platform team exists to make every engineer at Function faster, safer, and more autonomous. We don't build "internal tools." We build the infrastructure, abstractions, and guardrails that shape how the entire product gets built and shipped.
This is a force-multiplier role. Your work won't land in one feature. It will land in every feature.
You'll join a small team tackling real, high-impact problems across the engineering organization:
Observability & Developer Experience
Make it easy for engineers to understand what's happening in production. Consolidate fragmented signals into unified, trustworthy views. Reduce the time from "something seems wrong" to "here's exactly what broke and why."
CI/CD & Deployment Infrastructure
Make the path from commit to production faster and harder to break. Build deployment pipelines, pre-production safeguards, and rollout strategies that let teams ship with confidence at high velocity.
Test Infrastructure
Shorten feedback loops. Improve test speed, coverage tooling, and reliability so that the safe path and the fast path are the same path.
Platform Primitives & Standards
Codify org-wide best practices into defaults and abstractions that every service inherits. Auth, instrumentation, error handling: when these patterns are consistent, complexity stays flat as the team and product grow.
What We're Looking For
- AI-native workflow. You already use LLMs as a daily tool to write, debug, and reason through problems. You know how to steer a model toward useful output and when to stop prompting and start thinking.
- Strong fundamentals in backend or frontend development
- Genuine curiosity about infrastructure, DevOps, and developer tooling
- Comfort working in cloud environments (GCP experience is a plus, not a requirement)
- Familiarity with CI/CD concepts, containerization, or observability tools
- A bias toward making things simpler, not just adding more
- Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
