CNC Machinist – Milling & Turning (Programming & Setup)
Location: Newport News, VA
Job Type: Full-Time | Contract-to-Hire
Work Setting: Onsite
Pay Rate: Starting at $20.00/hour, with higher pay based on experience
We are seeking a CNC Machinist with experience in both milling and turning operations to support production in a high-volume manufacturing environment. This role combines machine setup, G-code programming, and hands-on machining to produce precision components with consistent quality.

- Review job orders, blueprints, GD&T requirements, and technical documentation to plan machining processes
- Develop and edit G-code programs for 3-axis CNC milling equipment
- Set up machines, including tooling, offsets, and work coordinate systems
- Perform machining tasks such as drilling, tapping, turning, facing, contouring, and cutting
- Complete first-piece inspections and verify dimensions using precision measuring instruments
- Troubleshoot machining issues and make adjustments to programs or setups as needed
- Operate manual shop equipment including mills, lathes, drill presses, and saws
- Perform routine equipment maintenance and manage tooling for efficiency and performance
- Track material usage and assist with basic inventory activities
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace while meeting production targets
- At least 3 years of CNC machining experience
- Proficiency in writing and modifying G-code
- Strong understanding of geometry and trigonometry in machining applications
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings
- Familiarity with quality processes such as First Article Inspection and PPAP
- Basic knowledge of inventory control practices
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks (standing, bending, reaching)
- Strong attention to detail and effective time management skills
- Experience in sheet metal or mixed manufacturing environments
- Exposure to CAM software (e.g., SolidWorks or similar platforms)
- Familiarity with ISO 9001 quality standards
- Involvement in process improvement or continuous improvement initiatives
- Hands-on experience operating manual mills and lathes
- CNC vertical machining centers (comparable to Fadal VMC series)
- Manual machining equipment
- Precision measuring tools including calipers, micrometers, depth gauges, and dial indicators
