RN job details:

Essential Job Duties:

1. In consultation with the Infection Control System Manager performs activities associated with the investigation, monitoring and prevention of nosocomial infections.

  • Develops and/or utilizes a system for detection of infections within the hospital.
  • Conducts investigations regarding reported infections.
  • Collects data regarding reported infections.
  • Must have ability to analyze and interpret data regarding reported infections.
  • Assists to implement corrective actions regarding reported infections.
  • Collaborates with department managers to assess individual department needs regarding education for practical and effective patient management practices that minimize the risk of infection.
  • Provides guidance to nursing units and other departments to identify problems or breaks in technique, set priorities and problem-solve.
  • Reviews procedures such as dressing changes, catheter insertion and care, and venipuncture care, and makes recommendations regarding technique.
  • Maintains records of reported infections and infection control activities
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and interprets, as necessary, the principles of medical and surgical asepsis, and infection control practices (i.e. isolation, handwashing, etc.)
  • Evaluates recorded data and makes recommendations to the physician and nursing staff or other members of the health care team.

2. Assists and/or implements educational programs concerning infection control within the hospital.

  • Provides education, consultation, and guidance to hospital staff, medical staff, patients, families and visitors regarding infection control issues.
  • Establishes content and objectives for a program of infection control appropriate to each department's needs.
  • Participates and/or cooperates with all departments in research and development of programs for improvement of patient care.

3. Assists with development and implementation of performance improvement activities for the Infection Control program.

  • Participates in data analysis and performance improvement activities as outlined in the Infection Control Scope of Service Plan (C AUTI,VAP, C L-BSI, MRSA, SSIs).
  • Performs hazardous and QA surveillance audits and hospital rounding to ensure compliance with infection prevention policies and procedures.

4. Demonstrates knowledge of hospital's Infection Control and Employee Health Service policies and procedures.

  • Interprets hospital policy and procedure, and any changes for coworkers, patients and visitors.
  • Assists in establishing and maintaining personnel health policies that pertain to prevention of cross-contamination.
  • Makes recommendations concerning hospital-wide infection control program.
  • Reviews/revises policies and procedures pertaining to infection control, in consultation with the Infection Control System Manager.

5. Demonstrates knowledge of regulatory agencies and accrediting organizations, rules, regulations and/or standards.

  • Interprets and understands the most current regulations and/or standards from the following organizations: HFAP, JC AHO, ISDH,OSHA, C DC and other as appropriate.
  • Collaborates with the Infection Control System Manager regarding compliance with regulatory agencies requirements.
  • Functions as a resource for hospital departments and staff regarding current regulations.

6. Participates in the development of departmental goals and objectives.

7. Completes special assignments as delegated by the Infection Control Director and/or System Manager.

8. Demonstrates professional conduct and positive attitude.

  • Functions within the legal limitations as specified by the Indiana Nurse Practice Acts.
  • Courteous, cooperative and supportive of co-workers, patients, families, visitors, and physicians.
  • Assists in meeting the clinical needs of students in all health fields by serving as a resource person and role model.
  • Demonstrates initiative, adaptability and dependability in relationships with co-workers and hospital staff.
  • Communicates effectively.
  • Manages time efficiently.
  • Maintains patient/employee confidentiality.
  • Exhibits proper hygiene and positive, appropriate appearance.

Qualifications:

  • Must have graduated from an accredited nursing program - BSN required
  • Must have an active IN RN license
  • Two years successful experience as a Registered nurse with time spent as an Acute Care Nurse
  • Should be trained in infection surveillance, prevention, and control functions. Should also have knowledge or job experience or both in at least:
    • Epidemiologic principles and infectious disease
    • Sterilization, sanitation, and disinfection practices
  • Should also be knowledgeable in:
    • Adult education principles: and/or
    • Patient care practice
    • Computer skills

License/Certification:

  • BLS certification
  • IN RN license
