Accountant Intern at Westland Construction Inc

Under the direction of the Assistant Controller, the Accountant Intern will support the accounting team in maintaining financial records and assisting with daily financial operations. This role provides hands-on experience in tracking the organization’s assets, liabilities, profit and loss, and other key financial activities while developing foundational accounting skills.
Duties/Responsibilities:

Assists with general cost accounting and other related duties for the organization.
Supports the preparation of monthly balance sheets, income statements, and profit and loss statements.
Helps maintain and update the general ledger.
Assists with coding invoices, setting up new accounts, reconciling accounts, and supporting the monthly close process.
Aids in reconciling bank accounts, verifying deposits, and resolving discrepancies.
Supports reconciliation of cash disbursement accounts, payroll, and customer accounts.
Assists with accounts payable and accounts receivable processes, including invoice verification and collections follow-up.
Helps gather documentation and support external auditors during audits.
Assists with preparing and filing tax-related documentation as needed.
Supports the purchasing and invoicing system processes.
Learns and applies acceptable accounting practices and procedures.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Basic understanding of financial and cost accounting principles.
Willingness to learn and apply generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel); familiarity with accounting software is a plus.

Education and Experience:

Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Prior internship or coursework in accounting is preferred but not required.

Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
