Event Maestro Wanted: Meeting Planner at the Nation's Leading Bankruptcy & Restructuring Association
Are you a resourceful, creative event professional who thrives on turning big ideas into flawless experiences? Do you bring initiative, problem-solving instincts, and a passion for innovation to everything you do? The American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI) — the largest organization in the insolvency and restructuring space — is looking for a dynamic Meeting Planner to join our Alexandria, VA-based events team.
At ABI, events aren't just what we do — they're a cornerstone of our mission and our business. That means your work will matter, your results will be recognized, and your impact will be felt across an organization of over 11,000 members and 40+ annual conferences.
Why ABI?
We're not your average association. We're a forward-thinking, technology-driven organization that actively integrates AI into our daily workflows — from content development to operational planning. We believe efficiency is a competitive advantage, and we give our team the tools and trust to work smarter. If you're excited by the idea of using AI tools to streamline event logistics, communications, and reporting — and want to be part of a team that's actually walking the walk on innovation — you'll fit right in here.
We also believe in rewarding results. Our events drive revenue, and when you deliver, it shows. Success here is seen, celebrated, and compensated.
What You'll Own
As our Meeting Planner, you won't just execute tasks — you'll own your events from concept to closing recap. You'll be the strategic mind and operational force behind ABI's meetings and large-scale conferences, working closely with internal teams, volunteer leaders, and external partners to create exceptional member experiences.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Full lifecycle event management — site selection, contract negotiation, logistics, on-site execution, and post-event analysis
- Budget ownership and financial reporting, with a focus on driving profitability and cost efficiency
- Vendor and venue negotiation, building long-term partnerships that deliver value
- Collaboration with volunteer committees to develop timely, relevant programming
- Creation of marketing materials and event communications that drive registration and engagement
- Webinar coordination and integration of virtual/hybrid event formats
- Leveraging AI tools and technology platforms to enhance planning efficiency and event quality
Who You Are
You're not someone who waits to be told what to do. You spot problems before they become crises, bring creative solutions to the table, and take pride in the details that make an event feel effortless to attendees. You're equally comfortable in a spreadsheet and on a venue floor. You know how to manage up, across, and externally — and you bring energy and professionalism to every interaction.
You likely have:
- 3–5 years of meeting planning experience, with association or non-profit experience strongly preferred
- A bachelor's degree (required)
- CMP certification (a plus, not a dealbreaker)
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple events simultaneously without losing the thread
- Experience with MS Office, CRM systems, event management platforms, and digital marketing tools
- Comfort with — or genuine curiosity about — AI tools and workflow automation
- Sharp negotiation skills and strong financial acumen
- A collaborative spirit and the confidence to take initiative independently
What We Offer
- Competitive salary commensurate with experience, with performance-based recognition
- Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
- 403(b) retirement plan with employer matching
- Generous PTO that grows with your tenure
- Flexible Spending Accounts (healthcare and dependent care)
- Short- and long-term disability coverage
- $50,000 life insurance policy at no cost to you
- Professional development and continuing education support, including CMP sponsorship consideration
- Free on-site Fitness Center
- Parking/Metro benefits
- 1 work-from-home day per week in a modern Old Town Alexandria office
- ~40% travel to conference destinations across the country, mostly in luxury properties.
