Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Youth Services Manager, the Youth Services Librarian is responsible for providing reference and readers’ advisory to library patrons. Provides input in the development and execution of long-range plans for programs, services, and collections for children, parents, caregivers, and families.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Plan and coordinate a wide variety of assigned programs and services specifically for early childhood (0-5 years), families, and caretakers.
  • Maintain collections, including weeding, repairs, and discards.
  • Consult professional reviews, select, and/or recommend materials for youth services collections.
  • Assist with collection development and analysis of collection and program statistics.
  • Coordinate preschool visits and early childhood literacy initiatives.
  • Continue professional development such as attending conferences and workshops to maintain expertise in appropriate areas.
  • Create book displays and bibliographies.
  • Perform all duties in compliance with library policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work is performed in a typical library environment

Salary Range

$24.89-$37.33 per hour

Schedule

Full-time, 37.5 hours/week with day, evening, and weekend shifts.

Flexible schedule depending on department needs

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ relevant experience working with children and their caregivers.
  • Knowledge of current library trends, methods, practices, and equipment.
  • Extensive knowledge of authors, literature, and materials for youth.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines and work independently.
  • Proficient technology skills, including Microsoft Windows and Office applications, Google Suite applications, Internet, and other specialized computer applications needed to perform the job, and the ability to adapt to changing technology.
  • Ability to interact with the public and staff in a consistently friendly, helpful, and professional manner.

Physical Requirements

The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach with hands and arms, kneel, or get down on the floor, and climb stools. The ability to push carts of library materials weighing up to 100 pounds and lift materials weighing up to 25 pounds is required.
