Job Description

Senior DevSecOps Engineer United States

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior DevSecOps Engineer based in United States.

This role offers the opportunity to strengthen a mission-critical, event-driven platform supporting complex Federal Government programs. You will help engineering teams safely integrate with a shared Amazon MSK/Kafka event bus while improving the security, reliability, and automation of the underlying platform. Working across multiple teams and organizational boundaries, you will guide integrations from architecture and schema design through production deployment. You will build secure CI/CD pipelines, automate AWS infrastructure, and establish strong observability and operational practices. The role combines hands-on engineering with technical leadership, mentoring, and cross-functional collaboration. It is well suited to a senior engineer who enjoys solving complex platform challenges and raising engineering standards in a security-focused environment.

Accountabilities
  • Guide engineering and partner teams through end-to-end integration with the Amazon MSK/Kafka event bus, from initial architecture discussions and schema design through production cutover.
  • Contribute to schema governance, data contracts, integration patterns, onboarding documentation, and production-readiness standards that make future integrations more consistent and efficient.
  • Coordinate cross-team and cross-program integration initiatives, helping teams resolve technical challenges and establish durable agreements.
  • Build and maintain secure, automated CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions or similar technologies, incorporating security scanning, testing, compliance controls, and auditable deployment practices.
  • Champion DevSecOps principles, including secrets management, dependency and container scanning, least-privilege access, and secure software delivery aligned with Federal security requirements.
  • Operate and evolve AWS infrastructure supporting the event platform and related services through Infrastructure as Code, primarily using Terraform.
  • Support Amazon MSK cluster operations, including capacity planning, topic and partition strategy, scaling, upgrades, performance, and cost optimization.
  • Strengthen reliability and observability through effective metrics, logging, alerting, tracing, incident response, root cause analysis, and post-incident reviews.
  • Help engineering teams design resilient event producers and consumers with appropriate replayability, graceful failure, and high availability.
  • Partner with product owners, engineering leads, and government stakeholders to prioritize and deliver integration work within a complex multi-vendor environment.
  • Mentor engineers on event-driven architecture, Kafka practices, DevSecOps, and secure cloud engineering.
  • Leverage AI-assisted development and operational tools to improve automation, monitoring, deployment efficiency, and infrastructure insights while maintaining appropriate security and compliance standards.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 8+ years of experience in DevOps, DevSecOps, Cloud Engineering, Site Reliability Engineering, Platform Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Proven hands-on production experience with Amazon MSK and/or Apache Kafka, including cluster operations, topic and partition design, schema management, and producer/consumer development or optimization.
  • Experience designing or supporting enterprise-scale event-driven architectures and working with technologies such as Schema Registry and Kafka Connect or comparable solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical initiatives across multiple teams, facilitate agreement, remove integration blockers, and maintain high engineering standards.
  • Strong experience with AWS services, with AWS GovCloud experience preferred, as well as hands-on Terraform experience for Infrastructure as Code.
  • Experience designing and maintaining enterprise CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, or equivalent platforms.
  • Strong understanding of DevSecOps and secure software delivery, including experience with security, compliance, and automated controls.
  • Experience supporting highly available, mission-critical production environments and working within Agile development methodologies.
  • Proficiency with Docker, Linux administration, Git, and scripting languages such as Python or Bash.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes or other container orchestration platforms and observability tools such as CloudWatch, Datadog, Grafana, Prometheus, or Splunk.
  • Experience leveraging AI-assisted tools for infrastructure automation, operational analysis, monitoring, or development is valued.
  • Federal Government experience, particularly with the Department of Veterans Affairs, is preferred, as is experience supporting shared Kafka platforms used by multiple independent teams.
  • Familiarity with Federal security and compliance frameworks, including ATO and RMF processes, is a strong plus.
  • AWS Professional, DevOps Engineer, Kubernetes, Terraform, or comparable certifications are highly desirable.
  • U.S. citizenship is required, along with the ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust suitability determination. An active Public Trust or recently completed Federal background investigation is strongly preferred.
  • Strong communication, documentation, collaboration, and mentoring skills, with the ability to work effectively across technical and non-technical stakeholder groups.
  • Ability to work independently, navigate ambiguity, and operate effectively within complex, multi-vendor environments.
Benefits
  • Competitive salary: $138,000–$151,000 annually, with final compensation determined by skills, experience, and scope of responsibilities.
  • Competitive compensation with market-leading bonus opportunities.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage, with a significant portion of premiums subsidized.
  • Health Reimbursement Account contributions for qualifying high-deductible health plans.
  • Company-provided healthcare concierge assistance for navigating coverage, finding care, and resolving billing or claims questions.
  • 401(k) plan with company contributions, including dollar-for-dollar matching up to 3% and additional matching for the 4th and 5th percent, with immediate vesting.
  • 20 days of PTO accumulated annually.
  • 11 paid holidays.
  • Bereavement, jury duty, parental, military, and other leave programs.
  • Sabbatical opportunities.
  • Company-paid short- and long-term disability insurance.
  • Company-paid life insurance, plus voluntary life and accidental income replacement benefits.
  • Professional development reimbursement and opportunities for continued learning.
  • Health club reimbursement.
  • Matching donation program and annual philanthropic activities.
  • Pet insurance.
  • Fully remote work within the United States, with occasional travel for program meetings, planning sessions, or production support.
  • Core working hours of 8:30 AM–4:30 PM EST.
