Description:

The Clinical Intern provides counseling and therapeutic support services to clients under the supervision of a licensed clinical professional. This position is designed for graduate-level students completing internship requirements for a master's degree in counseling, social work, marriage and family therapy, psychology, or a related behavioral health field. The intern gains practical experience in assessment, treatment planning, individual and group counseling, clinical documentation, and interdisciplinary collaboration while supporting the organization's mission of providing quality behavioral health and substance use treatment services.


  • Conduct client interviews and psychosocial assessments under supervision.
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and reviewing individualized treatment plans.
  • Provide individual counseling sessions as appropriate to educational level and supervision requirements.
  • Co-facilitate psychoeducational, therapeutic, and process groups.
  • Maintain timely and accurate clinical documentation in accordance with agency, state, federal, and accreditation requirements.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings and case consultations.
  • Monitor client progress and communicate significant concerns to supervising clinicians.
  • Provide crisis intervention support under the direction of licensed staff.
  • Assist with discharge planning and referral coordination.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations and professional ethical standards.
  • Participate in clinical supervision and training activities as required by the academic program and organization.
  • Complete all required agency orientation, compliance, and safety training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements: Education
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited master's degree program in:
    • Clinical Mental Health Counseling
    • Social Work (MSW)
    • Marriage and Family Therapy
    • Psychology
    • Or a closely related behavioral health field
Experience
  • No prior professional counseling experience required.
  • Previous volunteer, internship, or practicum experience in behavioral health, substance use treatment, healthcare, or human services preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish rapport with diverse populations.
  • Understanding of counseling theories, therapeutic interventions, and professional ethics.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries.
  • Strong documentation and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Basic computer proficiency and ability to learn electronic health record systems.
  • Commitment to cultural competence, client-centered care, and recovery-oriented practices.

Licensure/Certifications

  • Must be actively enrolled in a qualifying graduate program requiring internship or practicum placement.
  • Must maintain eligibility as established by the educational institution.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification preferred or obtained within established organizational timelines.
