Job Summary
The dental hygienist is a vital member of the oral healthcare team. They specialize in preventive oral care and patient education, working alongside dentists to offer comprehensive dental hygiene services to patients. Our work week is Monday-Thursday.
Qualifications (Education, Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations)
- Must have an accredited Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Dental Hygiene.
- Must have a North Carolina RDH license.
- CPR certification is required.
- Skill in capturing and interpreting dental X-rays for diagnostic purposes.
- Strong dental terminology to effectively communicate with dentists and patients.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Perform dental cleanings, or prophylaxis, to remove plaque, tartar, and stains from teeth. This includes scaling and polishing procedures.
- Conduct thorough assessments of patients' oral health, including examining teeth, gums, and oral tissues for signs of disease, decay, or abnormalities.
- Capture and process dental X-rays as part of the diagnostic process. Analyze X-ray images to identify oral health issues.
- Educate patients on proper oral hygiene techniques, including brushing, flossing, and using additional aids like interdental brushes or mouthwash. Provide personalized recommendations for maintaining good oral health.
- Assist in diagnosing and treating gum diseases (periodontal diseases), such as gingivitis or periodontitis. Perform scaling and root planning procedures to remove plaque and calculus below the gum line.
- Apply dental sealants to protect teeth from decay, particularly in children. Administer fluoride treatments to help strengthen teeth and prevent cavities.
- Accurately document patient information, treatment plans, and procedures in electronic health records (EHR) or paper charts. Maintain up-to-date and organized dental health records.
- Conduct oral cancer screenings during routine dental visits, identify suspicious lesions or abnormalities, and refer patients for further evaluation if necessary.
- Assist with general administrative tasks, such as scheduling appointments, managing patient records, and coordinating with other dental team members.
- Adhere to strict infection control protocols, including proper sterilization of dental instruments, disinfection of treatment areas, and compliance with established safety guidelines.
- Stay updated on the latest advancements and research in dental hygiene through continuing education courses and professional development opportunities. Enhance knowledge and skills to provide the highest standard of care to patients.
