Job Description

Job Function:

Performs building care, maintenance, and operational support for the Nathaniel Bell Community Resource & Recreation Center. This position is responsible for the daily condition, cleanliness, safety, and operational readiness of the facility, including routine building maintenance and repairs, detailed facility care, gym floor upkeep, and oversight of routine cleaning performed by other staff.

The position also provides primary operational support for rentals and special events, including facility setup and breakdown, monitoring reserved spaces, assisting renters and event organizers, and ensuring spaces are properly maintained and restored. Additional responsibilities include opening and closing procedures, exterior property care, front desk support, and assisting throughout the Bell Center as needed.

Essential Duties:

    Serves as the primary staff member responsible for the daily care, condition, cleanliness, and operational readiness of the Nathaniel Bell Community Resource & Recreation Center, including interior and exterior areas. Performs routine building maintenance and repairs, including minor carpentry, painting, hardware, fixtures, furniture, equipment, plumbing, and other general building repairs within the employee’s training and ability. Inspects the building, equipment, and property for maintenance needs, troubleshoots routine issues, completes appropriate repairs, and reports larger or specialized repairs to Building Maintenance. Performs higher-level and detailed cleaning throughout the facility and trains, directs, and monitors routine cleaning responsibilities. Maintains and cares for the gymnasium floor, including proper cleaning, preventative care, and use of appropriate floor-care equipment. Performs and oversees established opening procedures, including facility walkthroughs, access points, lights, equipment, room conditions, cleanliness, and preparation for daily operations. Performs and oversees established closing procedures, including room resets, equipment, cleanliness, access points, lights, and securing the facility. Serves as the primary on-site facility support for rentals and special events, assisting renters, event organizers, and City staff with access, room needs, equipment, and use of reserved spaces. Coordinates and assists with rental and event setups, breakdowns, and room resets, including tables, chairs, equipment, staging, and other facility needs. Monitors rentals and events while in progress to ensure facility rules are followed, spaces are properly used, and facility-related needs or concerns are addressed. Conducts post-rental and event inspections and ensures spaces are cleaned, properly reset, and ready for the next scheduled use. Assists with setups, breakdowns, and room resets for regular programs, meetings, and activities. Conducts routine building and property walkthroughs throughout the shift to identify and address maintenance, cleanliness, safety, damage, and operational concerns. Maintains and organizes cleaning supplies, maintenance tools, facility equipment, furniture, storage areas, and operational materials and identifies supply or equipment needs. Trains and assists staff with proper cleaning methods, equipment use, facility care expectations, opening and closing procedures, and room setup procedures. Maintains the cleanliness and appearance of exterior areas, including entrances, walkways, courtyard, outdoor activity areas, parking areas, and grounds, and identifies landscaping, irrigation, lighting, or other property concerns requiring follow-up. Documents and reports facility damage, maintenance needs, safety concerns, unusual conditions, rental/event issues, and other matters requiring follow-up. Works collaboratively with Recreation, Facility Care, Building Maintenance, and Special Events staff to support facility operations and address building and property needs. Primarily works afternoon and evening hours, with weekend work required based on facility operations, rentals, programs, and special events. Performs other related duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Knowledge of facility care, custodial practices, cleaning methods, equipment, and basic maintenance. Knowledge of proper gym floor care and facility safety practices. Ability to train and direct staff in routine cleaning and facility care. Ability to coordinate facility setups and support rentals, programs, and special events. Strong customer service and communication skills. Ability to perform opening and closing procedures and identify facility, safety, or maintenance concerns. Ability to work independently, prioritize responsibilities, and follow written and oral instructions. Ability to safely operate custodial and light maintenance equipment. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.


Required Qualifications:

    High school diploma or GED. Valid Florida Driver’s License. One year of experience in facility operations, rentals, event support, facility care, custodial, maintenance, or related work; experience supporting facility rentals and operations preferred. General knowledge of facility care, cleaning methods, equipment, and basic maintenance practices. Ability to support facility operations, including rentals, events, room setups, and other assigned duties. Complete required National Incident Management System (NIMS) training within six (6) months of completing the probationary period.


Essential Physical Skills:

    Acceptable eyesight (with or without corrections).Acceptable hearing (with or with hearing aid).Able to lift and or carry weights of fifty pounds repetitively.Sitting, stooping, reaching, bending, and climbing.Walking or standing for periods of time.Able to exert up to fifty pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.Must be physically able to operate a variety of custodial tools and equipment such as mops, brooms, brushes, vacuums, and any other equipment necessary to perform assigned tasks.Must be physically able to operate a variety of specialty floor maintenance equipment.

Environmental Conditions:

    Works inside in an office environment.Works out of doors.
