This role is focused on advancing equitable urban forestry initiatives across the Midwest, helping cities and communities strengthen their tree canopy to address climate resilience, environmental justice, and public health challenges. You will work directly with municipalities, state agencies, and community partners to deliver technical assistance, tools, and strategic guidance that support tree planting, protection, and long-term urban forest management. The position blends field expertise, stakeholder engagement, and project management within a mission-driven environment committed to sustainability and social impact. You will play a key role in translating national urban forestry strategies into local, on-the-ground action. This is a highly collaborative role requiring both technical knowledge and strong relationship-building skills. The work directly contributes to advancing Tree Equity and improving environmental outcomes in underserved communities.
- Provide technical assistance to cities, state agencies, and community partners to support urban forestry planning, implementation, and maintenance initiatives.
- Manage project scopes, timelines, deliverables, and budgets for assigned regional urban forestry programs and partnerships.
- Maintain ongoing relationships with municipal and state stakeholders to understand needs, barriers, and opportunities for urban forest expansion.
- Support development and implementation of policies, ordinances, and community engagement strategies that advance Tree Equity goals.
- Facilitate workshops, trainings, webinars, and convenings to share tools, resources, and best practices in urban forestry.
- Utilize and promote tools such as Tree Equity Score and related frameworks to support data-informed decision-making.
- Track, document, and report on project progress using organizational systems and ensure accurate program reporting.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to support national initiatives, resource development, and knowledge sharing across regions.
This role requires experience in urban forestry, environmental planning, or a closely related field, along with strong stakeholder engagement and project coordination skills. Candidates should be comfortable working in a remote, collaborative environment while managing multiple projects and partner relationships.
- 3–5 years of professional experience in urban forestry, environmental science, urban planning, landscape architecture, or related fields.
- Knowledge of urban forestry principles, arboriculture standards, canopy assessment, and community-based tree planting approaches.
- Experience working with municipal or state agencies, nonprofits, or community-based organizations.
- Strong project management skills, including tracking timelines, deliverables, and budgets across multiple initiatives.
- Familiarity with environmental justice and equity principles related to urban greening and community resilience.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts for diverse audiences.
- Ability to build trust and maintain strong relationships with cross-sector stakeholders.
- Experience working with grants, contracts, or publicly funded programs is highly desirable.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a dynamic, remote-first environment.
- Preferred certifications such as ISA Certified Arborist or equivalent urban forestry credentials.
- Competitive annual salary range of $50,000 to $65,000, depending on experience.
