Job Description
At MacLean Engineering, we’re not just building machines — we’re redefining the future of mining through innovation. We’re seeking a Team Lead – Vehicle Interface, Telematics to help shape the next generation of underground technology advancing MacLean and our customers towards a zero entry, zero waste, and zero harm future. If you’re passionate about advancing engineering excellence and want to be at the forefront of real-world technology application, this role is for you.
The Position:
We’re seeking a Team Lead – Vehicle Interface to help shape the next generation of underground technology, advancing MacLean and our customers towards a zero entry, zero waste, and zero harm future. If you’re passionate about advancing engineering excellence and want to be at the forefront of real-world technology application, this role is for you.
As the leader of the Vehicle Interface team within the Telematics, Automation, and Controls Division, you’ll play a pivotal role in defining the development roadmap and vehicle communication technology across MacLean Engineering’s 32+ vehicle types. Working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, you’ll drive progress in vehicle integration, hardware installation, wiring and electrical design, vehicle communication protocols, remote operation support, and configuration management — while mentoring and empowering your team in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
This team is building on MacLean’s strong foundational digital controls to enable visualization, monitoring, and control of our vehicles from further afar. The successful candidate will operate at the cutting edge of a rapidly evolving technology sector, developing innovative solutions for real-world mining challenges with a focus on safety-critical resilient interfaces, real-time communications, and modular scalable service-oriented architectures.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Lead a team of engineers in the design and deployment of vehicle connectivity solutions across on-vehicle networks, embedded systems, off-vehicle communications for remote operation and monitoring, and vehicle interface management through message structures and information models.
- Provide hands-on mentorship demonstrating engineering excellence across multiple technology stacks and varying architectures, with particular emphasis on J1939/CAN bus, OPC UA, Protobufs, Simulink, CODESYS, and asset/configuration management.
- Partner cross-functionally with electrical, controls, data, platform, autonomy, and GUI teams — providing the vehicle-side foundation (hardware, host device, and interface contracts) that other teams’ modules and services run on and integrate with.
- Foster a culture of knowledge sharing across overlapping functions, leveraging the team’s diverse domain expertise to mature interdepartmental collaboration and impact.
- Oversee and directly contribute to the proper installation of Telematics hardware on MacLean vehicles, ensuring correct integration with vehicle systems.
- Own the on-vehicle host edge device (running Azure IoT Edge): hardware selection and installation, provisioning, host-level connectivity (Wi-Fi, LTE), status indicators (LEDs), device health and diagnostics, and ensuring the host reliably supports the modules deployed to it.
- Ensure wiring diagrams and electrical documentation are accurate, up to date, and maintained as vehicles and systems evolve.
- Design and maintain the on-vehicle communication layers: J1939/CAN messaging, Ethernet/UDP transport, OPC UA information models, Protobuf schemas.
- Support and design protocols for line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight remote operations.
- Execute end-to-end validation of the vehicle interface: CAN trace analysis, bench and HIL/SIL testing, debugging network and timing issues, and validating that modules deployed to the host device run correctly against vehicle signals.
- Own interface control documentation (ICDs), message definitions, electrical diagrams, wiring diagrams, configuration/version management, and traceability across technical vehicle documentation.
- Ensure compliance with industry best practices and internal/international standards, cybersecurity practices on the host device, and robust release governance for vehicle firmware, configuration, and interface definitions.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, leadership abilities, and problem-solving capabilities. They will demonstrate organizational skills, discipline, an aptitude for proactive learning, and a positive attitude. Additionally, they should meet the following qualifications:
- Minimum 7 years of experience with the responsibilities and duties described above.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering, computer science, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience with J1939/CAN bus protocols, OPC UA, and Protobuf message structures.
- Hands-on experience with embedded development tools including Simulink, CODESYS, and C++.
- Strong understanding of vehicle hardware integration, wiring, and electrical systems.
- Experience with asset and configuration management in a vehicle or industrial controls environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng) license or similar certification is an asset.
- Mining industry experience is an asset.
- Experience supporting remote operation protocols (line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight) is an asset.
- Proficiency in other languages, primarily Spanish and French, is an asset.
- Experience with Azure IoT Edge and IIOT is an asset.
