Reports to: Head Coach or Aquatics Director

Summary/Objective: 

Provides excellent service to team members in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment through coaching of age group swimmers.

Essential Functions: 

• Conducts practices and guides skill mastery, program planning, and communication with swimmers.  Ensure that Y values are incorporated into programming. 
• Conducts energizing, fun, safe, and educational practices.  Ensures fair practice and meet experiences.  
• Stays up to date on competitive swimming best practices and trends. 
• Assist with the collection and organization of performance data. 
• Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. 

• Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures. 
• Able to commit to a set practice schedule and attend practices assigned. 
• Completes incident and accident reports as necessary. 
• Supervise swim team members during practices and swim meets as directed by the Head Coach.
• Provide leadership to all swim team participants and volunteers at practice, during meets and fundraising events.
• Responsible for assuring high standards of program quality and safety in accordance with YMCA safety and risk management policies.
• Expected to be at all swim meets, following directives given by the Head Coach.
• Fosters an inclusive environment appreciative of differences in the workplace.

Supervisory Responsibility 

This position will not have any supervisory roles.

Work Environment 

This position operates in and around a pool area. Sometimes the floor will be slippery, or the working environment will seem humid. Noise level has the capability of being loud at times.  

Physical Demands 

The Swim Team Coach is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus to remain alert. 

Travel 

Travel may be required in various areas in Minnesota. Including, but not limited to, Grand Rapids, Brainard, Grand Marais, and the Twin Cities. 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work 

This is a part time position. The pool is open seven days a week and hours will depend on the requirements of the aquatics department. 

Required Qualifications/Experience 

• Certified in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid.
• Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness. 
• Experience working with youth and competitive teams 
• Commitment of supporting principles of equal opportunity and affirmative action to achieve a diverse work environment.

Preferred Qualifications/Experience 

• Background in competitive swimming 
• Certified swim instructor, coach, or lifeguard 

Additional Eligibility Qualifications 

• Must be able to pass a background check.
