JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) John Sealy School of Medicine is seeking an outstanding physician-scientist in Pediatric Nephrology to join our growing academic program. The position is open at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level, commensurate with experience and academic accomplishments.
This is an exceptional opportunity for a pediatric nephrologist with a strong commitment to research, clinical excellence, education, and academic leadership to develop and lead an independent research program while providing high-quality care to children with kidney disease.

The Opportunity

The successful candidate will join a collaborative Pediatric Nephrology program providing comprehensive care for children with renal disorders across UTMB's clinical network, including Galveston and League City. The division provides care for children with a broad spectrum of kidney conditions, including hypertension, chronic kidney disease, congenital and acquired renal disorders, and disorders of bladder and urinary function.

The physician-scientist will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop and sustain an independent, externally funded research program in pediatric nephrology or a related area.
  • Pursue innovative basic, translational, clinical, or population health research relevant to kidney health in children.
  • Collaborate with investigators across Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and UTMB's research centers and institutes.
  • Mentor medical students, residents, and junior faculty in research and scholarly activities.
  • Participate in clinical care within Pediatric Nephrology, with opportunities for both inpatient and outpatient practice.
  • Contribute to the continued development and expansion of Pediatric Nephrology clinical and research programs at UTMB.
  • Participate in teaching and educational activities for medical students and pediatric residents.
  • Provide academic and clinical leadership commensurate with rank and experience.

Research Environment

UTMB offers a highly collaborative academic environment with extensive opportunities for interdisciplinary investigation. The institution has more than 10 research centers and three institutes, as well as the Galveston National Laboratory, providing opportunities for collaboration across basic, translational, and clinical research programs. UTMB is currently ranked among the nation's leading academic institutions in NIH research funding.

We are particularly interested in candidates whose research complements or expands existing expertise in areas such as:
  • Pediatric kidney disease and chronic kidney disease
  • Hypertension and cardiovascular-kidney health
  • Kidney development and congenital kidney disorders
  • Glomerular and tubular diseases
  • Acute kidney injury
  • Kidney disease biomarkers and precision medicine
  • Translational nephrology
  • Clinical and outcomes research
  • Health disparities and population health
  • Innovative approaches to prevention and treatment of pediatric kidney disease

Candidates with established NIH funding or a strong record of obtaining extramural support are especially encouraged to apply. Early-career investigators with strong research potential and a compelling vision for developing an independent program are also encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will:
  • Provide compassionate, evidence-based care to children with kidney disease.
  • Participate in inpatient and outpatient Pediatric Nephrology services.
  • Teach and mentor learners at multiple levels.
  • Develop collaborative research initiatives and pursue extramural funding.
  • Publish scholarly work in high-impact peer-reviewed journals.
  • Participate in departmental and institutional committees and academic activities.
  • Contribute to the strategic growth of Pediatric Nephrology at UTMB.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • MD, DO, or equivalent medical degree.
  • Completion of an accredited Pediatrics residency.
  • Completion of an accredited Pediatric Nephrology fellowship.
  • Board certification or eligibility in Pediatrics and Pediatric Nephrology.
  • Eligibility for medical licensure in the State of Texas.
  • Demonstrated commitment to clinical care, education, and research.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Advanced research training such as an MS, MPH, PhD, or equivalent research experience.
  • Evidence of scholarly productivity and/or extramural research funding.
  • Strong potential for developing an independent research program.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across disciplines.
