Job Description

The Support Services Worker contributes to a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for patients, visitors, and staff across Ellis Medicine facilities. This role supports multiple operational areas, including environmental services, patient transport, food service, grounds maintenance, and parking operations. The position requires adaptability, attention to safety, and strong customer service skills. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Preferably a high school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must be able to interpret and apply simple instructions. Communication requirements include the ability to comprehend the spoken English language in addition to being able to communicate and read the English language.
  • Experience in grounds keeping, maintenance, transportation, food service, environmental cleaning, or parking operations preferred.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Internal candidates must remain in good standing and have no formal disciplinary documentation, including attendance violations. Internal candidates will have achieved the minimum necessary scoring criteria, evidenced by the departmental skills assessment tool.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION:

Essential functions are the fundamental duties of the position. These tasks are critical to the role and must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.

1. Environmental Services (Housekeeping)

  • Perform terminal cleaning of patient rooms following discharge to support infection prevention.
  • Clean and disinfect high‑touch surfaces, restrooms, furniture, and common areas.
  • Remove and transport regular, hazardous, and biohazardous waste in accordance with OSHA and hospital policies.
  • Replenish linens, soap, paper products, and other supplies.

2. Patient Transportation

  • Safely transport patients using wheelchairs, stretchers, or beds.
  • Assist clinical staff with patient transfers in and out of mobility devices.
  • Deliver, retrieve, and clean transport equipment.
  • Transport lab specimens, medical equipment, or blood products as assigned.

3. Dining and Nutrition Services

  • Deliver meal trays to patients, ensuring accuracy of diet orders and patient identification.
  • Assist with tray setup, including beverages and condiments.
  • Collect used trays and return them to the food service department.
  • Stock nourishment rooms and unit pantries.

4. Grounds Maintenance

  • Maintain outdoor areas, including mowing, trimming, weeding, mulching, and pruning.
  • Maintain and operate small powered equipment (e.g., lawnmowers, snow blowers).
  • Perform seasonal tasks such as planting, debris removal, and snow clearing.
  • Ensure entrances and walkways remain free of obstacles.

5. Parking Attendant & Safety

  • Conduct rounds of parking lots and garages to remove debris and hazards.
  • Maintain clean, safe, and organized parking areas.
  • Provide courteous assistance and information to patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Support traffic flow and enforce parking regulations.
  • Assist with snow removal and salting during winter months.

6. General Responsibilities

  • Report urgent repairs, safety concerns, or equipment issues promptly.
  • Attend required training and participate in department meetings.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and hospital policies.
  • Follow all departmental procedures, safety guidelines, and work rules.

NON‑ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

These duties may be assigned but are not fundamental to the role.

  • Provide on‑the‑job training to new staff.
  • Assist with special projects or events as needed.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • May require lifting, pushing, pulling, or moving items up to 50 pounds.
  • May require standing, walking, bending, or remaining stationary for extended periods.
  • May require working indoors and outdoors, including exposure to varying weather conditions.
  • May require use of hands and arms for handling equipment, tools, or materials.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in spoken and written English.

Salary Range: $18.83-$26.58 /hour Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
