This role is focused on ensuring the accuracy, consistency, and compliance of outpatient medical coding within a high-impact healthcare data environment. You will be responsible for reviewing complex medical records and assigning precise diagnostic and procedural codes that support billing, reporting, and clinical operations. The position plays a critical role in maintaining data integrity and enabling healthcare organizations to improve patient care, reimbursement accuracy, and operational efficiency. You will work in a fully remote and flexible setting, collaborating with clinical and administrative teams to resolve documentation gaps and coding issues. The role requires strong attention to detail, deep coding expertise, and the ability to manage high-volume, complex workloads. It is ideal for experienced coding professionals who value accuracy, autonomy, and continuous learning in a mission-driven healthcare context.

Accountabilities:
  • Review outpatient medical records and assign accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for diagnoses and procedures.
  • Ensure correct sequencing of codes and appropriate assignment of discharge dispositions based on clinical documentation.
  • Abstract and enter coded data to support hospital reporting, analytics, and reimbursement processes.
  • Maintain high coding accuracy standards, including APC assignment quality and productivity benchmarks.
  • Identify and communicate documentation improvement opportunities and coding discrepancies to clinical teams.
  • Collaborate with healthcare staff and internal stakeholders to resolve coding, billing, and reimbursement issues.
  • Ensure compliance with AHIMA standards, organizational policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in ongoing education, credential maintenance, and required compliance training (including HIPAA).
Requirements:
  • Active AHIMA (RHIA, RHIT, CCS) or AAPC (CPC, COC, CIC, CRC, or equivalent) certification.
  • Minimum of 2–3 years of outpatient coding experience in a hospital or coding consulting environment.
  • Strong expertise in outpatient coding specialties such as Emergency Department, Same Day Surgery, Observation, and Injections/Infusions.
  • Solid understanding of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS coding systems and medical terminology.
  • Experience with coding and abstracting software systems (Cerner PowerChart, TruCode, Dolbey Fusion, or similar is a plus).
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain high accuracy in high-volume environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with ability to work effectively in remote teams.
  • Strong organizational skills, professionalism, and ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to interpret clinical documentation and apply coding guidelines consistently.
Benefits:
  • Fully remote work with flexible scheduling options.
  • Competitive hourly compensation based on experience and location.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance for eligible full-time employees.
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan with employer match.
  • Paid time off, holidays, and floating holidays (for full-time roles).
  • Free continuing education units (CEUs) annually.
  • Education and certification stipend for professional dues (AHIMA/AAPC).
  • Provided work equipment (laptop, monitor, headset, keyboard, mouse).
  • Structured onboarding and training led by experienced coding leadership.
  • Ongoing mentorship and professional development in a supportive remote environment.
