Position Summary

The Cook/Food Service Team Member prepares and serves food in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations, as well as established DaySpring policies and procedures.

This position helps ensure that quality food service is consistently provided, meals are prepared and served on schedule, individual resident needs and preferences are respected, and customer expectations are exceeded.

Essential ResponsibilitiesMeal Preparation and Service
  • Prepare and cook meals according to established menus and recipes under the direction of the Food Service Coordinator.

  • Ensure meals are prepared and ready according to established food-production and service schedules.

  • Serve meals according to each resident’s individual needs and preferences.

  • Present food in an attractive and appetizing manner.

  • Follow established menus, recipes, portion expectations, and food-production schedules.

  • Minimize food waste while ensuring residents’ nutritional and service needs are met.

Food Safety and Kitchen Sanitation
  • Prepare, handle, and serve food in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local food-safety and sanitation requirements.

  • Follow all established department policies, procedures, and operational standards.

  • Maintain appropriate standards of personal cleanliness and hygiene.

  • Maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of the kitchen and food-preparation areas.

  • Properly clean, use, and care for kitchen equipment and utensils.

  • Help ensure that equipment and food-service supplies remain in proper working condition.

Required Recordkeeping

Complete and maintain accurate food-service records, including:

  • Daily meal census

  • The type and quantity of food used

  • Daily menus, including any approved changes

  • Food temperatures

  • Other records required by the Food Service Coordinator or established department procedures

Any changes to the daily menu must receive approval from the Food Service Coordinator and be documented accordingly.

Teamwork and Service
  • Work efficiently to meet required meal-preparation and service schedules.

  • Follow oral and written instructions provided by the Food Service Coordinator or other designated leadership.

  • Work cooperatively with other team members to provide consistent, high-quality food service.

  • Help create a positive dining experience by respecting residents’ individual needs and preferences.

  • Perform responsibilities in a manner that supports DaySpring’s mission and commitment to serving older adults with God’s love.

Qualifications

Applicants must:

  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.

  • Have experience in food preparation, food presentation, and food service.

  • Be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Possess a general knowledge of state food-sanitation regulations.

  • Be able to work efficiently and meet required preparation and service schedules.

  • Maintain appropriate standards of personal cleanliness and hygiene.

  • Successfully complete all pre-employment requirements, including a physical examination.

  • Successfully complete a tuberculosis screening or chest X-ray, as required.

Working Conditions and Scheduling
  • Must be available to work assigned shifts, including every other weekend.

  • Opportunities to pick up additional hours may be available.

  • The position requires working in a kitchen and food-service environment.

  • Work is performed in a smoke-free facility and on smoke-free grounds.
