JOB SUMMARY:

To perform precision CMM and manual layout inspection of forging dies, tooling, templates, and forgings; to verify conformance to blueprints, GD&T, and customer specifications; to perform capability, SPC, and hardness evaluations; and to document and communicate results to internal and external customers and other parties within the forging manufacturing plant.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (not all inclusive)

  • Operate CMMs and prepare CMM programs for die, tooling, and forging inspections; perform preventative maintenance on CMM equipment and gear/metrology lab instruments.
  • Perform in-process inspections, first-piece/first-article production tryouts, and final audits on forgings, dies, and machined parts.
  • Perform capability studies (Cpk/Ppk) and SPC studies per company and customer specifications.
  • Perform gage calibrations and Gage R&R studies; use, understand, and maintain gaging through the plant’s gage tracking system.
  • Perform precision layouts of dies, templates, tooling, and forgings using CMM and manual layout techniques, applying GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
  • Perform hardness evaluations on forgings and dies using Brinell, Rockwell, or other applicable hardness testing equipment.
  • Document nonconformances identified during layout and inspection activities and support root cause analysis and corrective action (e.g., NCR/CAR, 8D, 5-Why).
  • Enter and maintain layout, CMM, and inspection data in the plant’s ERP/MES and SPC data collection systems; communicate results effectively with production, engineering, quality, and customers.
  • Support internal and customer quality audits (ISO 9001/IATF 16949/AS9100) and maintain audit-ready CMM, layout, and calibration records; work with minimal supervision.
  • Maintain and safely use lab equipment and lifting devices; comply with all safety, PPE, and physical requirements, including safe lifting of up to 50 lbs.; understand and apply the plant Quality Policy and its relationship to customer requirements; perform other duties as assigned by supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • High school education or equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of CMM operation and programming.
  • Basic preventative maintenance skills for metrology equipment.
  • General inspection knowledge.
  • Familiarity with FAI/first-article documentation requirements.
  • Basic knowledge of math, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Working knowledge of SPC and process capability methodology.
  • Knowledge of gage calibration principles and Gage R&R methodology.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprint drawings.
  • Knowledge of ASME/ANSI Y14.5 geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Knowledge of hardness testing methods and equipment.
  • Knowledge of root cause analysis and corrective action methodology.
  • Computer skills – Word, Excel, Windows, ERP/MES, and SPC software.
  • Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred:

  • Working knowledge of applicable quality management system standard(s).
  • CMM or inspection experience.
  • Sound recordkeeping practices.
  • Knowledge of lab equipment and lifting devices.
  • Ability to safely and correctly lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Knowledge of the plant Quality Policy.
