Job Description

Staff AI Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff AI Engineer based in Canada.

This role sits at the intersection of software engineering and applied AI, with a strong focus on redefining how modern development teams build and ship software using agentic systems. You will lead the design of AI-first engineering workflows, ensuring that AI agents are not only productive but also safe, reliable, and aligned with architectural standards. Acting as a technical leader, you will shape how development teams transition from traditional practices to AI-driven engineering models. The role combines hands-on system design, evaluation of AI-generated outputs, and strategic oversight of quality engineering practices. You will play a critical role in defining guardrails, governance, and observability for AI-assisted development at scale. This is a high-impact position where your decisions will directly influence engineering velocity, product quality, and organizational adoption of AI.

Accountabilities:

In this role, you will define and lead the adoption of AI-first engineering practices, ensuring that AI agents are effectively integrated into the software development lifecycle while maintaining high standards of quality, security, and scalability.

  • Design and implement end-to-end agentic development workflows, including AI agent orchestration, evaluation, and governance
  • Establish embedded quality engineering practices across the development lifecycle, ensuring reliability of AI-assisted outputs
  • Evaluate AI-generated code and system outputs for correctness, security, and architectural consistency
  • Build and maintain AI-powered internal tools, including LLM orchestration systems, observability frameworks, and integration layers
  • Define guardrails, risk controls, and governance models for safe and scalable AI-assisted development
  • Mentor and guide engineering teams transitioning toward AI-directed workflows, including prompt engineering and evaluation techniques
  • Lead architectural decision-making for complex systems that require human oversight beyond AI capabilities
  • Drive test automation and quality strategy as a core part of engineering, not a separate function
Requirements

We are looking for a seasoned engineering leader with deep experience in software architecture, AI systems, and quality engineering, capable of guiding teams through major technological transformation.

  • 7+ years of software engineering experience with progressive technical leadership responsibilities
  • Proven experience building agentic AI systems and multi-step AI workflows
  • Strong expertise in LLM orchestration, prompt engineering, and AI evaluation/observability frameworks
  • Background in quality engineering or test automation, including designing testing frameworks from scratch
  • Ability to critically assess AI-generated code for correctness, security, and architectural integrity
  • Experience mentoring or leading teams through significant engineering paradigm shifts
  • Strong proficiency in at least one modern backend stack (TypeScript/Node.js, Python, C#/.NET, or similar)
  • Solid understanding of CI/CD pipelines, automated testing strategies, and release engineering practices
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for diverse audiences

Nice to have:

  • Experience with MCP (Model Context Protocol) or similar agent integration frameworks
  • Exposure to both QA engineering and software development disciplines
  • Experience with enterprise stacks such as Angular, .NET, or SQL Server
  • Cloud experience (Azure, AWS, or GCP)
  • Familiarity with E2E testing tools such as Playwright or Selenium
  • Experience scaling engineering practices across multiple teams or squads
Benefits
  • Competitive compensation package aligned with senior technical leadership roles
  • Full-time permanent position
  • Flexible work arrangements, including remote options within Canada
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and wellness coverage
  • Strong focus on professional development and continuous learning
  • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge AI systems and agentic architectures
  • High-impact role shaping engineering practices at organizational level
  • Inclusive and innovation-driven engineering culture.
