Director of Communications

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director of Communications based in Canada.

This is a senior leadership role responsible for shaping and executing national communications strategies that amplify influence, strengthen public positioning, and advance organizational impact. You will operate at the intersection of strategy and execution, acting as a trusted advisor to senior leadership while also driving hands-on delivery of key communications initiatives. The role requires a strong ability to translate complex mission-driven objectives into compelling narratives that resonate with government, public, and private sector audiences. You will lead external communications efforts across Canada, manage media relationships, and contribute to high-impact thought leadership initiatives. Working within a collaborative global environment, you will align messaging across teams while ensuring local relevance and strategic consistency. This is a highly influential position where your work directly supports visibility, reputation, and long-term strategic goals. Accountabilities:

In this role, you will lead the development and execution of high-impact communications strategies that elevate organizational influence and strengthen engagement across Canada:

  • Design and implement integrated communications and public affairs strategies aligned with national influence and positioning goals.
  • Act as a strategic advisor to senior leadership, including the Managing Director, supporting executive messaging, narratives, and public engagement.
  • Develop and refine key messaging frameworks and storytelling approaches tailored to diverse stakeholders, including government, partners, and communities.
  • Lead thought leadership initiatives, including speeches, public remarks, and executive communications in collaboration with internal stakeholders.
  • Manage media relations across Canada, building strong relationships to enhance visibility and reputation.
  • Oversee issues management and reputational risk communications in partnership with internal teams.
  • Track, measure, and report on communications effectiveness, using insights to continuously improve strategy and execution.
  • Guide and mentor communications professionals while fostering alignment, collaboration, and talent development across teams.
  • Coordinate with external agencies and internal specialists to ensure consistent, high-quality delivery of campaigns and content.
Requirements

The ideal candidate brings strong senior-level communications expertise, strategic thinking, and the ability to operate effectively in complex, multi-stakeholder environments:

  • 5+ years of experience in senior communications, public affairs, or strategic communications roles in Canada.
  • Proven experience developing and executing communications strategies within large or global organizations.
  • Strong background in media relations, executive communications, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Ability to translate complex policy, social impact, or organizational goals into clear and compelling narratives.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills with the ability to tailor messaging to diverse audiences.
  • Experience advising senior leaders and acting as a trusted communications partner.
  • Strong leadership and people management experience, including mentoring or managing communications teams.
  • Analytical mindset with experience measuring communications impact and optimizing strategies based on insights.
  • Experience working with external agencies and cross-functional teams.
  • French-English bilingualism is considered a strong asset.
  • Strong business acumen, political awareness, and ability to operate in complex external environments.
