EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in web design, computer science, digital media, communications, or a related field.
  • Three years of professional experience in web design and development, including experience with a CMS-driven website environment
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience relevant to the role may be considered for this position.
  • Demonstrated experience leading projects and guiding or mentoring other team members

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in higher education, healthcare, or large enterprise environment
  • Prior experience supervising staff or serving in a lead or senior role
  • Experience with accessibility compliance (WCAG), analytics platforms, and enterprise-scale web governance
  • Familiarity with UTMB brand standards, healthcare or academic web requirements, and distributed content models

JOB SUMMARY

The Assistant Director of Web Design and Development provides hands-on leadership for the design, development, governance, and continuous improvement of UTMB's websites and digital platforms. This role balances direct technical contribution with staff supervision, project oversight, and strategic planning, ensuring the university's digital presence is effective, accessible, secure, and aligned with institutional priorities. Reporting to the digital communications director and the vice president for Strategic Communications, the assistant director works closely with marketing, branding, content, and IT partners to translate institutional goals into well-designed, scalable digitalsolutions that support UTMB's missions of education, research, clinical care, and public service. This role actively contributes to design and development work while setting standards, improving processes, mentoring staff, and guiding the long-term evolution of UTMB's web ecosystem.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Provides direct supervision and hands-on leadership for web design and development staff, including workload planning, mentoring, performance feedback, and skills development, while remaining actively involved in technical work.
  • Working with the web services team, plans, designs, builds, and maintains university websites and digital platforms, working collaboratively across UTMB's mission areas and with the institutional branding and design team to ensure a consistent visual and user experience.
  • Leads and actively manages web projects, developing scopes, timelines, and resource plans; tracking progress; resolving issues; and ensuring projects are delivered on time and aligned with strategic goals.
  • Works with colleagues to establish, implement, and maintain UX/UI and information architecture standards, including wireframes, mockups, templates, and page structures that support brand standards, usability, accessibility, and scalability.
  • Provides advanced CMS development and governance, ensuring effective use of the university's content management system, enforcing best practices, and supporting enhancements and integrations.
  • Guides and supports CMS users and stakeholders by providing consultations, training, documentation, and troubleshooting related to website strategy, content modeling, accessibility, SEO, and platform capabilities.
  • Ensures compliance and quality across all web properties, including accessibility standards, federal and state regulations, UTMB brand guidelines, UX best practices, and internal governance policies.
  • Oversees creation and maintenance of academic, research, education, and clinical websites, as well as institution-wide assets such as interactive campus maps, wayfinding tools, provider directories, and location-based content.
  • Acts as a senior liaison between website owners, IT, and distributed partners, facilitating effective use of shared enterprise tools such as analytics, QA/accessibility platforms, search, digital asset management, and site inventories.
  • Contributes to strategic digital planning and innovation, evaluating emerging technologies, platforms, and workflows, and recommending improvements to enhance performance, sustainability, and user experience.

Marginal or Periodic Functions:
  • Performs related duties as required in support of the web services team, the department and institutional priorities.
  • Adheres to internal controls, reporting structures, and university policies and procedures.
