Shelter Overnight Worker - 1 Year Term Position for Leave Coverage in Saanich, British Columbia at Victoria Native Friendship Centre

Working aspart of the Shelter Team, and reporting directly to the Shelter OvernightSupervisor, the Overnight Worker supports operation, daily tasks and processesof the VNFC Shelter, which provides temporary shelter for unhoused community.

As an Overnight Worker, job duties include the following:

•Workwithin the parameters of health and safety, with particular regard to communicabledisease protocols as they change and adapt with new information

•Regularand consistent sanitization of surface areas in line with communicable disease protocol

•Participatein daily team check-in and debrief, transferring information to the OvernightSupervisor

•Assistin daily activities including shelter setup, food preparation, guest welcoming,and inventory

•Helpclients build connections and supports to access programming at VNFC, orthrough other partner agencies throughout the region

•Assistwith meal distribution, which at times may require assembly

•Ensurethe building is properly cleaned and secured

•Assistclients in having a successful time at VNFC by supporting them to understandthe policies of the Shelter

•Drivingfor client pickup and/or drop-off

As a member of the VNFC team, job duties include thefollowing:

•Maintain confidentiality

•Document and report activity in alignment withVNFC practices and supports internal and external reporting as required

•Attend relevant professional training andmeetings when directed

•Participate in staff development, staff meetingsand department meetings as required, including community and cultural events

•Participate in data collection and evaluationtasks as requested

Familiarity and experience in Indigenous Communities

•Someknowledge of Indigenous cultures and practices including from the territory inwhich the work of VNFC takes place. Ability to speak about one’s own Indigenous culture, if applicable, andany communities the (prospective) employee has previously lived in or held jobswithin.

•Knowledgeand practice of providing community-based services to Indigenous peoples usingphilosophies of cultural humility and cultural safety.

Communication Skills and Abilities

•Good written and spoken communication skillswith the ability to write electronic correspondence, and other forms ofprofessional communication.

•Ability to effectively present informationand respond to questions from clients and the general public

•Proficiency in Microsoft Office Outlook

·Ability to spend a major portion of the workdaystanding, walking and/or sitting as well as possible bending and stretching,due to physical requirements of the work; this is a waking overnight shift

·De-escalation experience

·Understanding of how to triage and prioritizetasks

Education

•Recognizedcourse(s) related to position are an asset, particularly any focused oncultural safety and humility; or equivalent lived and/or professionalexperience

Work Experience

•Preferencefor past experience working in an Indigenous serving organization, services forhomelessness, addictions, or mental health, or community setting.

Licenses and/or Certificates

•ValidClass 4 unrestricted BC Driver’s license

•CleanDriver’s record

•FirstAid certification

•FoodSafe

• This position requires evening, overnight, weekend, and irregular hours.
