Description:

Maymont is a 100-acre historic estate and park, located in Richmond, Virginia, with many unique experiences for all to enjoy, including the historic Maymont Mansion, The Robins Nature Center, arboretum, formal gardens, and habitats for native Virginia wildlife and farm animals. Since 1975, Maymont has been maintained and operated by the nonprofit Maymont Foundation, committed to creating experiences that delight, educate and inspire its guests.

The Maymont Foundation is seeking a full-time, non-formal Educator to implement a wide variety of educational programming including environmental, historical, and other learning experiences throughout the grounds. This position reports to the Manager of Education.

Essential Functions:

  • Participate in the planning, development, scheduling, and implementation of educational, community, and outreach programming with a focus on Maymont’s goals to expand diversity and promote equity and inclusion
  • Assist in the preparation and coordination of resources, for all education and outreach programs and incorporates state and national standards of learning curriculum
  • Facilitates in-person and virtual programming aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning within the Maymont Mansion and outdoors in the historical gardens and grounds.
  • Provide proper animal care to environmental education animals under the direction of the Senior Manager of Zoology
  • Assist with collecting evaluations, program attendance and visitation numbers for monthly and annual reports
  • Represent the education department at various institutional meetings
  • Work effectively with other departments
  • Represent Maymont at public speaking engagements and events as requested
  • Support Maymont community and fundraising events, which may occur outside normal work schedule
  • Assists with other duties and tasks as assigned
Requirements:

Competencies:

  • Ability to professionally communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Knowledge of or interest in history and/or environmental science and how it relates to today
  • Proficiency in Google Suite and Microsoft Office
  • Ability to deliver high-quality, engaging instruction to children and Maymont guests
  • Ability to understand and work within a budget
  • Experience or a willingness to learn handling tame domestic or exotic animals including mammals, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Valid driver’s license required with reliable transportation to and from Maymont

Education and Experience:

  • One year of experience in non-formal teaching or related educational setting
  • Experience working with school age children and familiarity with Virginia SOL’s and Virginia Early Learning and Development Standards
  • Associate’s degree in history, museum studies, education, biology, environmental science, science education, or related field preferred

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking and talking for extended periods
  • Frequent climbing, bending, stooping and lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work inside and outside in all weather conditions
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
