Senior Plant Accountant

Department: Finance & Accounting
Reports To: Accounting Manager
Employment Type: Full-Time
Location: Midway, GA

Position Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Senior Plant Accountant to join our manufacturing finance team. The Senior Plant Accountant will support day-to-day accounting operations, month-end closing, financial reporting, and cost accounting.

This position will work closely with the Accounting Manager along with plant operations and supply chain to ensure accurate financial reporting to provide meaningful information for business decisions.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Prepare and post journal entries, accruals, and other month-end accounting adjustments.
  • Perform monthly balance sheet reconciliations and investigate variances or discrepancies.
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close activities.
  • Resolve inventory discrepancies -- stores, raw materials, WIP, and finished goods.
  • Participate with physical inventory and cycle counts.
  • Support product costing, standard cost updates, and analysis of manufacturing variances, including material, labor, and overhead variances.
  • Monitor and analyze plant expenses and provide explanations for significant variances.
  • Fill in for accounts payable, accounts receivable, as needed during vacation and PTO.
  • Track expenditures for capital projects with budget-to-actual reporting, in conjunction with fixed asset additions, disposals and depreciation.
  • Prepare recurring financial reports and ad hoc analysis for plant and corporate management.
  • Support internal and external audits by providing requested schedules and documentation.
  • Maintain compliance with company accounting policies, internal controls, and applicable accounting standards.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting, and internal controls.
  • Perform other accounting duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3-5 years progressive accounting experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment
  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting and financial statements.
  • Ability to analyze financial information and identify discrepancies or unusual activity.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with plant and finance teams.
  • Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Strong Excel and data-analysis skills.

Preferred:

  • Manufacturing or cost accounting experience.
  • Familiar with cost accounting practices.
  • Experience with ERP systems.
  • Previous involvement with internal or external audits.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Effective communication of financial information to both accounting and non-accounting personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality when handling financial information.

Work Environment

This position is based at a manufacturing facility and requires regular interaction with both office and plant personnel. The employee may occasionally enter production areas and must comply with all applicable plant safety requirements and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work at a desk and use a computer for extended periods.
  • Ability to walk through the manufacturing facility as needed to perform job responsibilities.
  • Ability to participate in physical inventory counts, which may require standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Ability to comply with applicable safety and PPE requirements when entering production areas.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary Range: $85,000 – $100,000 annually, depending on qualifications and experience.
