About This Position

Assistant Vice President, Patient Logistics

Job Overview:

The AVP of Patient Logistics is responsible for the leadership and function of the departments for overall quality of care delivered through the hospital organization. This leader will oversee the development, implementation and oversight of efforts, planning, organizing, and monitoring of all operations of Bed Management for the RWJUH campus and RWJBH system mission.

Reports to:

The Assistant Vice President of Patient Logistics will report to the Vice President, Operations RWJUH-New Brunswick

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Health Administration, Public Administration or related field
  • Experience working in an Acute Care facility
  • Minimum of seven (7) years’ experience in effectively managing all aspects of clinical operations in a complex matrixed healthcare organization, preferably within an academic medical center
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated coaching and mentoring skills to effectively develop subordinates

Essential Functions:

  • Patient Flow Management
    • Oversee and enhance the entire patient flow process, from admission to discharge, to ensure efficient operations and optimal patient care.
    • Provides expert counsel regarding clinical operations and strategies for its growth and development and is responsible for the development, interpretation, coordination and administration of policies on business and clinical operations, nursing, social work, pharmacy, hospital networks and managed care and contracting
  • Bed Utilization Optimization
    • Monitor and analyze bed occupancy rates, ensuring that patient admissions and transfers are managed effectively to avoid bottlenecks
  • Discharge Coordination
    • Develop and implement discharge planning protocols that facilitate timely and efficient patient transitions, minimizing delays and improving patient satisfaction
  • Collaboration
    • Work closely with medical staff, nursing teams, and administration to coordinate admissions, transfers, and discharges, ensuring smooth communication and teamwork across departments
    • Serve as a key member of the executive leadership team and will attend the meetings of the Joint Management council and the Operations committee on a regular basis
  • Data Analysis
    • Analyze patient movement data to identify trends, inefficiencies, and opportunities for improvement in logistics and operational processes
  • Reporting
    • Create and present reports for hospital leadership, providing insights into patient logistics performance metrics, challenges, and the effectiveness of implemented strategies
  • Staff Management:
    • Supervise the patient logistics team, providing guidance and mentorship, conducting performance evaluations, and ensuring ongoing professional development
  • Regulatory Compliance:
    • Ensure that all patient logistics operations comply with healthcare regulations and standards, implementing necessary changes as regulations evolve
    • Responsible for implementing an effective and ongoing program to measure, monitor, evaluate, and improve the quality of care delivered to patients, as well as the hospital’s performance
  • Resource Allocation
    • Advocate for necessary resources and support for patient care operations, including staffing, equipment, and facility enhancements to improve service delivery
  • Patient Satisfaction
    • Implement initiatives to enhance the patient experience throughout their journey in the hospital, soliciting feedback and making adjustments as needed
    • Takes a leadership role in the development and implementation of patient care programs, policies, and procedures that determine how patients’ nursing care needs are assessed, evaluated and met
  • Crisis Management
    • Develop and lead contingency plans to handle unexpected surges in patient volume, ensuring continuity of care and operational stability
  • Interdepartmental Coordination
    • Foster relationships with other departments such as emergency services, radiology, lab, surgery, oncology, cardiac, neuro, and transplant to streamline operations and improve service delivery across the hospital
    • Works with the President, members of management and the medical staff to develop and implement institutional strategy, and to develop and achieve fiscally responsible operational performance objectives
