About This Position

The Kent County Department of Public Works is seeking a skilled and motivated Landfill Systems Technician to join our team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong mechanical, electrical, and environmental aptitude necessary for the operation and maintenance of groundwater and leachate processing equipment and gas extraction systems.

Position Responsibilities include:

  • Closed landfill oversight,
  • Maintenance of pumps and treatment system equipment
  • Monitoring of landfill gas
  • Oversight of contractors
  • Creation of monitoring and maintenance reports
  • interaction with regulatory agencies
  • General site maintenance to ensure grounds are kept in safe and presentable condition, which includes tasks like mowing and trimming
** This position is eligible for a Referral Incentive to current Kent County Employees **

Must have a High School Diploma or GED and two (2) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of pumps. electrical systems, and related equipment, including the repair and installation of equipment, or related experience that demonstrates an ability to satisfactorily meet the requirements of the classification.

Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted Michigan driver's license. 40-hour Hazwoper certification desired.

In addition, the qualified candidate will possess:

  • Considerable knowledge of the mechanics of pumps, metering devices, and liquid processing equipment, including chemical feed systems, air compressors, mixers, etc.
  • Proven ability to read and understand schematic diagrams and prepare technical reports
  • Ability to analyze and repair electrical and mechanical malfunctions
  • Ability to prepare chemical solution tanks and to properly set chemical feed pumps at specified dosage rate, and ability to work safely with chemicals in various settings
  • Ability and willingness to work in various weather and environmental conditions, including operating a truck-mounted snowplow and clearing snow when needed for site access
  • Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for long periods and push, pull, and/or lift pumps
