Under the general direction of the Executive Director of the Physician Practices, and for clinical issues only the Provider, CNO, or Physician Practice Nurse, the CMA/LPN will provide direct and indirect patient care in an office setting in accordance assisting in a variety of clinical areas in efforts to meet fluctuating staffing needs during periods of increased workload, staffing shortages, and to help balance off long-term absences (i.e., illness, holidays, maternity leave, etc.), reducing overtime of regularly scheduled staff. Based on a volume change, the incumbent may start their shift in one practice and then be transferred or moved to a different practice to meet operational requirements. The incumbent will communicate with medical staff, other departments, and outside agencies while maintaining confidentiality in accordance with TJC, federal, state, and local guidelines, organizational and departmental policies, and procedures. This position requires self-motivation, creativity, and capabilities to function in a semi-autonomous role within a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE

  1. Identifies patient care requirements by establishing personal rapport with potential and actual patients and other persons in a position to understand healthcare requirements.
  2. Documentation of chief complaints, medical/surgical/family/social histories, medication reconciliations, vital signs, history of present illness, etc. appropriately and efficiently in EMR system.
  3. Promotes patient's independence through teaching (with provider instruction) about conditions, medications, self-care skills and answering questions.
  4. Assures quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards; measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and standards; making or recommending necessary adjustments; following practice and nursing standards of care set by federal, state, and governing agency regulations.
  5. Collaborates with the physician to resolve patient problems and needs utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies.
  6. Maintains a safe, clean, and organized working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations, calling for assistance from health care support personnel.
  7. Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations.
  8. Documents patient care services by charting in patient and department records.
  9. Maintains continuity among nursing teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
  10. Maximizes practice efficiency and patient flow through proactive communication with the physician, utilization of support staff, multi-tasking, and planning.
  11. Must obtain and maintain sufficient knowledge to include office-based procedures.
  12. Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential.
  13. Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  14. Maintains nursing and physician supply inventory by checking stock and anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies; using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
  15. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  16. Communicates and maintains a cooperative, professional relationship with patients, healthcare professionals, healthcare teams, and agencies.
  17. Conducts/Transports patients to the exam room and prepares room and patient for examination.
  18. Obtains specimens via phlebotomy process and urine specimens by policy/procedure.
  19. Administers medications according to established policies and procedures as directed by Physician or mid-level practitioner including administration of IV fluids, if under the scope of practice.
  20. Administers treatments according to established policies and procedures; Labs, etc., as directed by Physician or mid-level practitioner.
  21. Identifies physical symptoms, physical changes, and behavioral and physiological changes due to medications and report to physician and chart findings accurately.
  22. May perform pre-certification for services requiring authorizations.
  23. Prepares patient for ordered procedures: lab, X-ray, surgery, treatment, etc., and complete forms for ordered procedures.
  24. Calls in prescriptions for patients as required.
  25. Performs other duties as assigned or required within the scope of the job and training.
Requirements:

Minimum Level of Education: Education level equivalent to high school completion and completion of Licensed Practical Nurse Training course or Registered Nurse.

Formal Training: Management skills with experience in planning, organizing, implementing, facilitating, interviewing, counseling, and verbal and written communications.

Licensure, Certification, Registration: Must have and maintain an unencumbered current Georgia Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse license, or Medical Assistant Certification, and Basic Life Support CPR certification.

Work Experience: Six months to one-year related experience and/or training.
