Job Description

***REVISED*** Ocean Biodiversity Storytelling Postdoctoral Research Associate
Location: Princeton, NJ

Salary Range or Pay Grade: $65,000-$70,000
Description

The High Meadows Environmental Institute (HMEI) at Princeton University is accepting applications for a postdoctoral research position in ocean biodiversity and environmental storytelling. This interdisciplinary position seeks a scholar working at the intersection of ocean science, environmental humanities/environmental studies, and environmental media or science communication. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to a collaborative research project examining kelp forest ecosystems and coastal livelihoods in South Africa, with particular attention to the ecological and social dynamics surrounding South African abalone (Haliotis midae) and West Coast rock lobster (Jasus lalandii).

In addition to conducting research, the postdoctoral scholar will contribute to the development of a series of short multimedia narratives aimed at communicating ocean biodiversity challenges and changes to diverse public audiences. These outputs may include audio documentaries, video shorts, photography, or other digital media formats. The role involves working collaboratively on storytelling approaches that integrate scientific research with community perspectives/knowledges and that explore different modes of public engagement with ocean biodiversity loss, particularly in relation to noncharismatic marine species endemic to kelp forests.

The postdoctoral researcher will carry out literature review and data analysis on abalone and rock lobster populations in Great African Seaforest ecosystems, including environmental drivers such as temperature and oxygen variability, as well as fisheries dynamics (legal and illegal harvest). This scientific work will inform a set of narrative experiments developed in collaboration with faculty mentors and research partners. The postdoctoral researcher will participate in shaping and refining storytelling approaches that communicate scientific findings in accessible and impactful ways.

The position offers opportunities to engage with ongoing research and creative work across HMEI, including collaboration with Blue Lab, a climate storytelling incubator and environmental media studio, and an HMEI-affiliated ocean science research group. The postdoctoral scholar will work alongside faculty and collaborators engaged in related projects in ocean science and environmental media, including colleagues in South Africa and Namibia.
