Job Description

JOB TITLE: Assistant Principal of Instruction (API)

REPORTS TO: Principal


JOB OVERVIEW: The Assistant Principal of Instruction at LEAD Public Schools will drive outstanding academic results by managing instructional managers who in turn work with teachers to strengthen instruction and ensure that they are highly effective. This includes providing leadership on all aspects of curriculum, assessment, instruction, and teacher development. The Assistant Principal of Instruction at LEAD Public Schools desires to grow in the network and have a broader impact for the good of students and families. Motivate and inspire staff to prioritize student outcomes as the ultimate goal for all professional efforts.


Major Performance Responsibilities and Duties:


Manage and Develop Talent:

    Responsible for meeting instructional objectives by selecting, recruiting, onboarding, training, evaluating, and managing the overall performance of LEAD Instructional Managers (teachers)In addition to ongoing instructional coaching, conducts formal performance reviews and compensation discussions in alignment with LEAD human resource practices and policiesEngage instructional managers in reflective thinking while looking critically at evident instructional practicesBuild a strong rapport with instructional managers and teachers Model and explore best-in-class instructional practices through cognitive coaching conversationsDevelop instructional managers as leaders of others specifically to provide rigorous and high-quality instruction for students

Instructional Leadership:

    Lead the school’s instructional leadership team (ILT) to ensure that curricular and instructional initiatives are student-focused and aligned with the school’s vision, goals, and improvement plans Through the administration of assessments, develop teachers’ conceptual understanding of what students must know and be able to do and what instructional methods drive student masteryDevelop knowledge of how standards map to curriculum and assessment and ensure that all teachers are following the LPS network agreed-upon curriculaEnsure that all national, state, and network assessments are given on time, and data from them is used to drive instructional decisionsPartner with the APS and student support team to establish/maintain joyful, engaging, and orderly learning environments

Instructional Team and Teacher Development

    Develop instructional managers as leaders of others specifically to provide rigorous and high-quality instruction for studentsRegularly conduct classroom observations with instructional managers, APS, principal, teacher leaders and the LPS Academic Team on instructional practicesRegularly observe and coach Instructional Managers to ensure they are providing high-impact, actionable, and bite-sized feedback to teachers on a daily/weekly basisEnsure adequate and effective planning opportunities to collaborate, study curricular material, analyze teacher practices and student data, and adjust instruction Plan and deliver whole-school professional learning sessions that drive the highest-impact improvements in teacher mindsets and practicesImplement and monitor a rigorous evaluation system using the TEAM model. When necessary, collaborate with members of the network support team to address performance

Data Analysis

    Develop and utilize observation data to support instructional managers and coordinators to lead data-driven instructionLead instructional leadership team to determine how data aligns to end-of-year goals (what is being assessed and how it maps to standards)Collaborate with LPS Academic Team to break-out data prioritizing the analysis of what data is saying about areas of student mastery and growthIdentify cyclical, specific instructional actions and adjustments to fill students’ knowledge and skill gaps and a timeline to do soUse teacher data to inform, assess, and adjust professional learning goals and plans.

Other Responsibilities: Lead and/or collaborate in projects or initiatives as assigned


EXPERIENCE

    Previous instructional leadership experience as assistant principal, dean, or team leaderPrevious experience as an instructional coachExperience supervising and evaluating staff and serving as a leader of teams and individualsAt least four years of exemplary teaching are required; the ideal candidate will have closer to 7+ years of instructional experienceEngages in difficult conversations in an effective and timely manner

EDUCATION

Bachelor's degree from an accredited educational institution. A Master’s degree is preferred, but experience leading in a school and managing teams successfully is paramount.

Compensation

This is a full-time, exempt position. Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience, including full benefits and technology provisions.
