Carter Machinery Company, the authorized Caterpillar dealer serving Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washington D.C. is hiring a Director of Artificial Intelligence & Automation in Richmond, Virginia. The Director of AI is responsible for building artificial intelligence in-house. In this role, the Director of Artificial Intelligence serves as the primary technical point of contact for AI initiatives with Caterpillar, Inc, promote the adoption of AI/RPA tools, and develop internal applications using AI tools
Seeking candidates with an MBA or equivalent business experience combined with a deep technical/developer background; Hands-on proficiency in Python, SQL, and modern AI/ML frameworks (OpenAI API, Microsoft Copilot Studio, Claude Code, LangChain, etc.); Proven track record of building data-driven tools that solved tangible business problems; Superior communication skills: able to explain the "Why" of AI to an executive and the "How" to a developer.
Requirements for the Director of AI position includes:
- Must be able to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
- Must be able to engage in effective and persuasive discussions on complex topics with top management and other firm personnel. Must be able to make presentations to company personnel.
- Must be able to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple competing tasks and demands.
- Strong organization skills with ability to effectively prioritize (with changing priorities), multi-task, address issues quickly and professionally, and meet deadlines.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Must have an excellent driving record.
- 25% travel.
- Must be willing to work evenings and weekends if required.

Physical requirements must be met for the Director of AI job, including regularly being required to sit and talk or hear.
