Cook Position Summary
The Cook is responsible for preparing high-quality, nutritious meals for residents in accordance with established menus, standardized recipes, and individual dietary requirements. This role plays a critical part in resident satisfaction by ensuring meals are prepared safely, served on time, and meet all texture modifications, allergy restrictions, and physician-ordered diets. The Cook adheres to proper food handling, sanitation, and temperature-control standards while maintaining an organized, clean, and efficient kitchen environment. Working collaboratively with the Dietary team, the Cook supports daily meal service, special events, and catering functions while consistently demonstrating professionalism and hospitality aligned with the communitys service excellence philosophy and core values.
In addition to food preparation, the Cook is responsible for maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local food safety regulations, including infection control and allergen-handling practices. This position requires effective communication with dietary staff, nursing, and leadership to address resident preferences, intake concerns, equipment needs, and operational issues. The Cook contributes to quality assurance efforts through taste testing, audits, and participation in training and orientation for new team members when assigned. The role involves working in a fast-paced commercial kitchen environment and requires reliability, attention to detail, adaptability, and a genuine interest in serving older adults.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED preferred, with at least one year of cooking experience in healthcare, hospitality, restaurant, or senior living environments preferred
  • Ability to prepare meals using standardized recipes while following dietary restrictions, texture modifications, allergy protocols, and food safety standards
  • Knowledge of safe food handling, sanitation practices, temperature controls, and infection prevention procedures
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required Food Handler certification within established timeframes
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced kitchen environment
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work respectfully and collaboratively with dietary staff, nursing, leadership, residents, and families
  • Demonstrated professionalism, reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic
  • Basic math and computer skills to support food preparation, documentation, and electronic dietary systems as applicable
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, use hands for food preparation, and safely lift or carry items up to 50 pounds
  • Availability to work weekends, holidays, evenings, and varying shifts as required
