POSITION TITLE: Phlebotomist

POSITION SUMMARY
Performs a variety of tasks ranging from receiving patients in the laboratory to the processing of charts for HIMS, performing phlebotomy for inpatients and outpatients and outside facilities. It requires organizational ability in order to record information necessary for the reports required, inform the technologist of the tests ordered needing special attention on a basis other than routine, perform phlebotomist’s duties and be responsible for the billing of laboratory procedures and faxing lab reports when applicable. Must work with other phlebotomists, student aides, and technologists. Will have frequent contact with patients, families, physicians, nursing personnel, HIMS personnel, and salespersons. Will be responsible for communicating any pertinent information to the laboratory staff and director.
Requirements:POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Must be California CPT licensed. Must have a current BLS card. Must have the ability to organize a workload, communicate with others, type and possess some computer skills, must have mathematical skills, have legible handwriting, be familiar with medical terminology and able to learn laboratory terminology without difficulty. Must be flexible as the work involves many interruptions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Position-Specific Standards:
Specimen collection:
- Phlebotomy skills (to include therapeutic phlebotomy).
- Venipuncture/finger stick.
- Labeling, Processing and distribution of specimen.
- Interpret physician orders and collect appropriate samples.
- Prepare request slips correctly.
- Schedule out patients when appropriate.
- Relay tests request to technologist.
- Quest send outs / supplies / invoices.
Results Reporting:
- Distribute test results to the nursing station.
- Distribute test results to physician's /ordering providers
- Call or fax results when appropriate.
Clerical Detail:
- Enter Laboratory orders into US.
- Maintain daily accession log. OP number / drop off specific number.
- Order supplies when necessary to maintain stock.
- Maintain a clean, well-stocked laboratory- (collection trays, drawing chair, pipettes, glassware).
- Filing and shredding as necessary.
- File results to charts and Medical Records, including micro or send outs.

- Communicate all pertinent information to supervisor or co-workers.

- Complies with hospital safety and disaster policy and procedures. Demonstrates knowledge of and adheres to hospital and departmental safety regulations, disaster plans, infection control policies, and fire safety regulations, hazardous materials protocol.
- Demonstrates a working knowledge and understanding of National Patient Safety goals.
- Observes the Hospital/department dress code and wears ID badge.
- Conducts himself/herself in a professional manner at all times.
- Completes time sheet accurately and on a daily basis.
- Attends all required education/inservice meetings.
- Performs duties in an independent manner with minimum supervision.
- Utilizes company supplies efficiently.
- Responds to and uses disaster codes appropriately.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
