Description:

SUMMARY: Provides supervision to paraeducators, support and guidance to teachers, and develops and oversees career education and job development programs.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

Essential Functions:

1. Providing Leadership

- Supervises para educators in your assigned program, including evaluations, time sheets, etc.

- Responds to professional development needs of the para educators in your program; provides in-service training as needed

- Mentors new teachers 1 – 3 years.

- Assists teachers with developing and monitoring IEP goals and objectives, designing curriculum and lesson plans, and completing assessments.

- Reviews IEPs.

- Reviews consolidated books and progress reports to ensure they contain all necessary information and are aligned with IEPs.

2. Providing service:

- Facilitates and participates in the development, review and evaluation of individualized educational programs.

- Conducts evaluations and assessments to determine child's developmental status.

- Lifts up to 50 lbs. and push or pull in excess of 100 lbs. unassisted as needed.

3. Coordinating service:

- Participates in interdisciplinary team meetings.

- Plans and/or chaperones on and off-campus activities, appointments, programs and field trips.

- Manages classroom resources.

- Coordinates data collection and recording.

4. Career Education

- Provides best practices training in career education to MSB staff.

- Supervises, coordinates and expands on-campus work/training sites.

- Supervises career education teachers and job coaches.

- Coordinates the development and maintenance of career education portfolios for transitioning students.

- Serves as a member of the Career Education Team.

5. Job Development

- Builds work site linkages in the community.

- Works with community businesses to identify job placements.

- Coordinates job placements and job coach assignments.

Marginal Functions:

1. Performs additional duties as assigned.

2. Fills in for job coaches.

CONDITIONS:

Equipment Used: A variety of classroom materials, including adaptive equipment, such as feeding and positioning, augmentative communication systems, audio-visual equipment, personal computer and Braillers.

Performance Standard: Will assure 100% commitment to the integration, coordination, and implementation of student programs, and compliance with supervision, health, and safety standards.

Work Environment: Multiple indoor and outdoor environments with a variety of sound, lighting, and temperature conditions. May be exposed to childhood & other communicable diseases, and behavioral outbursts.

Work Schedule: 37 1/2 hours per week, Monday through Friday, with an unpaid meal break. This position follows the 12 month school schedule. Additional hours or flex schedule may be required

Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, skills and general abilities:

1. Minimum of Bachelor's degree and ability to meet MSDE certification for Special Education and/or Teacher of the Visually Impaired. Administration/supervision experience preferred. Minimum of 3 years of experience teaching in the classroom.

2. Comprehensive knowledge of education, including special education, principles, practices, and procedures, including developing and writing IEP's and performing appropriate teaching techniques.

3. Knowledge and core curriculum and expanded core curriculum for the visually impaired.

4. General knowledge of visual impairment, including causes, manifestations and adaptations.

5. General knowledge of medical disorders such as seizures or restrictions; alternate modes of communication; feeding techniques and orthopedic impairment/handling and positioning.

6. General knowledge of program development, classroom resource management, and student/personnel scheduling.

7. General knowledge of managing disruptive and harmful behaviors.

8. General knowledge of Braille reading and writing.

After six months in this position, the employee is required to have:

1. Certification in CPR & first aid

2. Completion in crisis prevention/intervention training.

After one year in this position, the employee is required to have:

1. Initiation of Visual Impairment Certification program if not otherwise certified previously.
