As a Clinical Lead at UNC Health Appalachian, you'll play an essential leadership role in supporting the day-to-day clinical operations of an ambulatory practice. Working closely with the Clinical Supervisor and Practice Manager, you'll help maintain high standards of patient care, support clinical team members, and identify opportunities to improve workflows and operational efficiency.

Compensation: Compensation starts at $20.57 per hour and is commensurate with education, experience, certification, and internal equity.

What You’ll Do as a Clinical Lead Clinical Leadership & Workflow Coordination

• Support daily clinical operations to ensure efficient patient flow and high-quality patient care.

• Coordinate clinic workflows, staffing coverage, and supply management.

• Provide hands-on patient care while serving as a clinical resource for team members.

• Step into staffing gaps as needed to maintain efficient clinic operations.

• Identify workflow challenges and recommend process improvements to the Clinical Supervisor or Practice Manager.

• Promote accountability, teamwork, and a positive work environment.

Patient Care & Clinical Support

• Deliver patient care within the scope of licensure or certification.

• Assist providers with examinations, procedures, treatments, and patient education.

• Ensure accurate clinical documentation and adherence to organizational policies.

• Maintain patient safety, confidentiality, and regulatory compliance.

• Support quality improvement initiatives and clinical best practices.

Team Collaboration & Communication

• Provide day-to-day guidance and support to clinical staff.

• Foster effective communication among providers, staff, patients, and leadership.

• Assist with onboarding, training, and mentoring new team members as needed.

• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to enhance patient care and clinic efficiency.

Operational Excellence

• Monitor clinic operations and proactively address routine issues.

• Ensure adequate clinical supplies and equipment are available.

• Support implementation of workflow improvements and operational initiatives.

• Maintain compliance with regulatory requirements and departmental standards.

Qualifications Minimum Education

• High School Diploma or GED required.

In addition, candidates must meet the education requirements applicable to their clinical discipline:

Medical Assistant

• Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program required.

Licensed Practical Nurse / Registered Nurse

• Completion of an accredited nursing program required.

• Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required for Registered Nurse candidates.

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

Experience

• Two (2) years of clinical lead experience in an ambulatory, hospital-based, or similar healthcare setting preferred.

• Previous leadership or supervisory experience preferred.

Licensure & Certifications

Medical Assistant

• Current Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) certification required.

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association required at the time of hire.

Licensed Practical Nurse / Registered Nurse

• Current, unrestricted North Carolina Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) license required.

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association required at the time of hire.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to guide, mentor, and support clinical staff.

• Strong clinical knowledge and competency within the applicable specialty.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

• Strong organizational and time management abilities.

• Ability to coordinate workflows and prioritize multiple responsibilities.

• Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills.

• Knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements and clinical standards.

• Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and healthcare technology.

Role-Specific Knowledge

• Medical Assistants: Clinical procedures, patient preparation, documentation, and ambulatory workflows.

• LPN/RN: Nursing assessments, medication administration, patient education, care coordination, and scope-of-practice requirements.

• Imaging/Radiology/Sonography: Imaging procedures, equipment operation, patient positioning, radiation safety, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to move throughout the clinic quickly and efficiently.

• Manual dexterity required for patient care, procedures, and documentation.

• Ability to lift and carry clinical supplies and equipment as needed.

• Prolonged standing, walking, bending, reaching, and patient interaction.

• Frequent computer use for documentation and communication.

• Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends based on operational needs.

Work Environment

• Primarily works within an ambulatory clinic setting.

• Regular interaction with patients, providers, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams.

• Frequent exposure to medical equipment and clinical procedures.

• Imaging/Radiology roles: Regular exposure to ionizing radiation; strict adherence to radiation safety protocols is required.

• Requires professionalism, confidentiality, and compassion during patient interactions.

• Fast-paced healthcare environment requiring adaptability, collaboration, and strong organizational skills.

• May require occasional schedule flexibility to support clinic operations.
