Position Summary

We are seeking a dependable, flexible, and safety-focused Class A CDL Lead Support Driver to support transportation operations across multiple locations. This traveling position is responsible for hauling food waste and organic materials using end-dump trailers while providing route coverage and operational support wherever needed.

The Lead Support Driver is a critical member of the transportation team, filling open routes caused by staffing shortages, PTO, vacations, sick leave, FMLA, training assignments, and other operational needs. This position requires independence, strong communication skills, and the flexibility to travel extensively to maintain uninterrupted service for our customers.

Travel will primarily include Michigan, Ohio, Western Pennsylvania, and Kentucky. Additional travel throughout the Midwest and surrounding regions may be required based on business needs.

The ideal candidate is an experienced CDL driver who enjoys variety, works well independently, communicates effectively, and can identify and troubleshoot minor equipment issues while on the road.

This is a safety-sensitive position requiring sound judgment, alertness, and attention to detail. Employees are responsible for their safety and the safety of others.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Safely operate Class A commercial vehicles with end-dump trailers to haul food waste, organic materials, and bulk commodities.
  • Provide route coverage for drivers who are unavailable because of PTO, vacation, sick leave, FMLA, training, staffing shortages, or open positions.
  • Travel to multiple operating locations and provide transportation support based on business needs.
  • Conduct pre-trip, post-trip, and daily vehicle inspections in accordance with DOT regulations and company policies.
  • Maintain accurate electronic logs, inspection reports, trip documentation, and all required paperwork.
  • Transport loads safely while complying with DOT, FMCSA, environmental, and company regulations.
  • Inspect equipment, identify maintenance concerns, and report mechanical issues promptly.
  • Perform minor operational troubleshooting when appropriate and safe.
  • Communicate effectively with dispatch, operations leaders, maintenance personnel, customers, and other drivers.
  • Learn unfamiliar routes quickly and assist with route familiarization when needed.
  • Provide operational support and guidance at assigned locations.
  • Represent the company professionally at customer sites, company facilities, transfer stations, and processing facilities.
  • Maintain safe operating practices in all weather, road, and working conditions.
Travel Requirements
  • Extensive overnight and weekly travel is required.
  • Assignments may vary based on operational needs.
  • Occasional weekend travel may be required.
  • Primary travel territory includes:
    • Ohio
    • Western Pennsylvania
  • Additional travel throughout the Midwest and surrounding regions may be required.

Company-paid travel includes hotel accommodations, transportation to assignments, and rental vehicles or airfare when applicable. Drivers also receive a $60-per-night per diem while traveling. This position does not require sleeper-truck operation.

Required Qualifications
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License
  • Ability and willingness to travel extensively
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations, Hours-of-Service requirements, and ELD systems
  • Acceptable motor vehicle record and a strong commitment to safety
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong judgment, adaptability, and problem-solving skills
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to identify equipment concerns
  • Ability to adjust quickly to new routes, facilities, equipment, and operating procedures
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two or more years of commercial Class A driving experience
  • End-dump trailer experience
  • Experience hauling food waste, organic materials, agricultural products, waste, or bulk commodities
  • Experience providing route coverage or supporting multiple operating locations
  • Basic equipment maintenance and troubleshooting experience
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to climb into and out of trucks and trailers multiple times throughout the workday
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Ability to conduct vehicle inspections and perform minor operational maintenance
  • Ability to sit and drive for extended periods
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, and mud
Work Environment

This position requires frequent travel and independent work in urban and rural environments. Drivers must be comfortable working around commercial vehicles, heavy equipment, customer locations, transfer stations, processing facilities, and agricultural sites.

The work schedule and assigned location may change with limited notice based on staffing levels and operational demands. Flexibility, professionalism, and dependable attendance are essential for success in this role.
