This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Grid Automation Protection & Control Systems Engineering Leader based in Canada.
This leadership role sits within a global engineering organization focused on modernizing electrical grids through advanced automation, protection, and control technologies. You will lead a high-performing team of protection and control engineers responsible for developing innovative solutions across the full product lifecycle. The role combines deep power systems expertise with people leadership, strategic planning, and hands-on technical direction. You will help advance software-defined automation, digital substations, renewable energy integration, and model-based engineering approaches. Working across hardware, software, product management, and external research partners, you will ensure protection and control capabilities are seamlessly integrated into next-generation grid technologies. This is a remote opportunity for an experienced engineering leader who wants to make a significant impact on grid reliability, flexibility, and sustainability.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a highly skilled team of protection and control engineers specializing in protection algorithms, filter design, automation, and renewable energy integration.
- Foster a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, collaboration, and knowledge sharing across the engineering organization.
- Oversee the complete lifecycle of protection and control systems and features, including design, specifications, simulation, modeling, implementation, testing, and integration.
- Drive the adoption of advanced technologies and communication protocols, including IEC 61850, to support digital substations and modern grid automation.
- Develop strategic approaches for integrating protection algorithms into products using model-based design, embedded systems development, and virtualization.
- Provide technical leadership in protection algorithms, automation, control system design, fault analysis, and power system stability.
- Guide the use of Matlab/Simulink and power system simulation platforms such as RTDS, PSCAD, and ATP/EMTP for design, development, and validation.
- Oversee hardware-in-the-loop testing and the application of RTDS to validate protection and control systems.
- Manage engineering projects, resources, budgets, performance metrics, priorities, and delivery expectations.
- Partner closely with hardware engineering, software development, product management, and other cross-functional teams to integrate protection and control functionality into complete equipment solutions.
- Monitor industry standards, regulations, emerging technologies, and best practices in power system protection and control.
- Establish and maintain relationships with universities and research organizations to support innovation and R&D initiatives.
- Represent the organization at industry conferences, technical forums, and other professional events, including through technical presentations and publications.
- Engage with utility customers on protection and control system design, implementation, and technical requirements.
- Support broader organizational initiatives and perform additional responsibilities as required.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution; a Master's degree is preferred.
- 10+ years of professional experience in power system protection and control engineering, including at least 5 years in an engineering leadership role.
- Proven experience leading, mentoring, and developing engineering teams.
- Deep technical expertise in power system protection, automation, control systems, fault analysis, and system stability.
- Hands-on experience with Matlab/Simulink and power system simulation tools such as RTDS, PSCAD, or ATP/EMTP.
- Experience applying protection principles to the design and development of protection relays and related systems.
- Knowledge of metering, Ethernet and serial communications, and protocols such as IEC 61850, Modbus, DNP3.0, and IEC 60870-5-103.
- Practical experience with RTDS and hardware-in-the-loop testing of protection and control systems.
- Experience with Model-Based Design principles for embedded protection relay or similar systems.
- Strong understanding of industry standards and regulations applicable to power system protection and control.
- Experience working with utilities on protection and control system design and implementation.
- Demonstrated project management, problem-solving, decision-making, and resource-planning abilities.
- Proven record of authoring and presenting technical papers at industry conferences or professional forums.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical topics effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong leadership, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills.
Benefits:
- Annual salary range of $126,000–$176,000 CAD.
- Compensation may vary based on experience, education, skills, and other relevant factors.
- Eligibility for a discretionary annual bonus.
