Job Description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior RUST Systems Engineer - Proxy Appliance based in India.
This is a senior systems engineering opportunity focused on building next-generation edge proxy infrastructure deployed across thousands of school networks. You’ll work deeply with Rust, Linux, networking, hardware appliances, and cloud infrastructure to develop reliable, high-performance systems software. The role sits close to the operating system and network stack, giving you the opportunity to solve challenging problems involving TCP, sockets, transparent proxying, and constrained deployments. You’ll contribute to fleet update pipelines and infrastructure that must operate reliably at significant scale. The environment is highly collaborative, with engineering teams working across India, the U.S., and the U.K. This is a remote India role offering the chance to build mission-critical technology supporting safer digital environments for students.
- Design, build, test, and maintain production-grade systems software for an edge proxy appliance deployed across large distributed networks.
- Develop high-performance networking components involving TCP stream handling, socket programming, transparent proxying, and network-level traffic management.
- Work close to the Linux operating system, including device drivers, kernel modules, cross-compilation, hardware bring-up, and other embedded Linux components.
- Develop and optimize Rust systems software with a strong focus on reliability, performance, resource efficiency, and maintainability.
- Build and operate containerized workloads suitable for constrained hardware and appliance-based deployments.
- Design and maintain components supporting fleet updates and reliable software delivery across distributed appliances.
- Conduct performance testing, load testing, CPU and memory profiling, and flame graph analysis to identify and resolve bottlenecks.
- Work with AWS services and Infrastructure as Code concepts to support the broader appliance and cloud ecosystem.
- Investigate complex systems and networking issues and develop robust solutions that perform reliably in production environments.
- Collaborate with engineering and cross-functional teams to establish strong development practices and deliver resilient infrastructure.
- Contribute to observability, reliability, and operational improvements across the appliance ecosystem.
- 6+ years of total software engineering experience, including at least 3 years of hands-on production Rust experience in a systems or embedded environment.
- Demonstrated experience developing systems or embedded software rather than primarily application or web-based Rust.
- Strong systems and network programming experience, including TCP stream handling, socket programming, and transparent proxying.
- Practical embedded Linux experience involving areas such as device drivers, kernel modules, cross-compilation, or hardware bring-up.
- Experience with Docker and containerization in constrained environments or appliance deployments.
- Strong understanding of performance engineering, including load testing, memory and CPU profiling, and flame graph analysis.
- Working knowledge of AWS and Infrastructure as Code concepts, with experience using tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation being advantageous.
- Experience with a named fleet, IoT, embedded-device, networking, or hardware-appliance product is strongly preferred.
- Experience with C/C++ or Go alongside Rust is a significant advantage.
- Exposure to eBPF, netfilter, HAProxy, or Envoy is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with RADIUS and observability technologies such as CloudWatch, Splunk, or SLO frameworks is a plus.
- Strong debugging, analytical, and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on building reliable production systems.
- Ability to work effectively in a distributed, remote environment and collaborate with teams across multiple regions.
- Full-time, direct-hire opportunity based in India.
- Remote work arrangement.
- Opportunity to work on high-impact systems infrastructure deployed at significant scale.
- Deep exposure to Rust systems programming, Linux networking, embedded infrastructure, and edge computing.
- Opportunity to work across networking, hardware appliances, cloud infrastructure, and fleet management.
- Collaboration with distributed engineering teams across India, the U.S., and the U.K.
- Opportunity to solve challenging performance, reliability, and systems-level engineering problems.
- Mission-driven work supporting safer and more effective digital environments for K-12 education.
- Career growth through ownership of core infrastructure and technically complex projects.
