Director, US People Operations

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director, US People Operations based in the United States.

This senior HR leadership role will serve as a trusted advisor to leaders and employees across the US workforce.
You will oversee people operations while shaping employee relations, compliance, benefits, payroll, HRIS, and performance management.
The role combines strategic partnership with hands-on operational leadership in a mission-driven, collaborative environment.
You will guide complex employee relations matters, employment-law compliance, investigations, and union-related activities.
You will also lead and develop a US People Operations team while strengthening HR processes, policies, and employee experiences.
Data, workforce insights, and cross-functional collaboration will be central to informing leadership decisions and organizational planning.
This fully remote opportunity is suited to an experienced HR leader who brings sound judgment, strong communication, and a people-centered approach to complex organizational challenges.

Accountabilities:
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the US People Operations team, fostering a high-performing, collaborative, responsive, and service-oriented culture.
  • Serve as a senior HR business partner and trusted advisor to leaders and employees, identifying people priorities and aligning HR initiatives with organizational objectives.
  • Partner with senior HR leadership and business leaders to develop and implement US people strategies and incorporate workforce considerations into broader business planning.
  • Act as the primary escalation point for employee relations matters, advising managers and employees on complex workplace issues.
  • Lead investigations, mediation, conflict resolution, performance-management guidance, disciplinary matters, and other employee relations processes.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable US federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, including EEO, ADA, FMLA, DOL, OSHA, and state-specific requirements.
  • Lead compliance audits, regulatory reporting, policy updates, and ongoing monitoring of changes to employment legislation across applicable US jurisdictions.
  • Manage union relationships, communications, negotiations, grievances, and related labor matters as the primary organizational point of contact.
  • Oversee US benefits administration and governance, including vendor management, renewals, open enrollment, plan reviews, employee communications, and regulatory documentation.
  • Ensure effective administration and compliance with federal and state leave requirements, including FMLA, PDL, CFRA, ADA, and other applicable regulations.
  • Oversee employee lifecycle processes from onboarding and status changes through offboarding, ensuring efficiency, accuracy, and adherence to established procedures.
  • Direct US payroll data workflows and maintain HRIS data integrity in partnership with Finance and other internal stakeholders.
  • Develop and present HR dashboards and metrics covering headcount, turnover, leave utilization, employee relations trends, and other workforce indicators.
  • Maintain and enhance HR policies, standard operating procedures, and employee handbook content while balancing organizational values with legal requirements.
  • Support compensation administration, workforce planning, and HR departmental budget management.
  • Promote employee engagement, retention, wellbeing, and a healthy work-home balance through effective people practices and communication.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree required; a graduate degree in human resources, organizational psychology, or a related field is preferred, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive HR Operations experience, including substantial experience with benefits administration and employee relations.
  • At least 3 years of experience managing or supervising HR professionals.
  • Demonstrated expertise handling complex employee relations matters, including investigations, performance management, disciplinary actions, coaching, and conflict resolution.
  • Strong knowledge of US federal, state, and local employment law and HR best practices.
  • Direct experience managing union relationships, negotiations, and grievance processes is preferred.
  • Experience within a nonprofit, purpose-driven, or mission-oriented organization is highly desirable.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, coaching, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to build credibility and rapport across all organizational levels.
  • Strong judgment, discretion, and confidentiality when handling sensitive employee and organizational matters.
  • Proven ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a team and matrixed environment.
  • Strong organizational and project-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Data-driven approach to decision-making, with the ability to use HR metrics and workforce analytics to inform strategy.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Teams and Excel.
  • Experience working effectively in a remote environment is preferred.

  • Ability to travel occasionally as business needs require.
  • Fluency in English is required.

  • Annual salary: $83,464.70–$104,330.88.
