Job Title: Custom Builder

Position SummaryThe Custom Builder is responsible for constructing custom cabinetry, fixtures, and architectural millwork based on shop drawings and design specifications. This role requires advanced craftsmanship, problem-solving skills, and a deep understanding of woodworking techniques. The Custom Builder plays a key role in delivering high-quality, made-to-order products that meet customer expectations in a family-owned manufacturing environment. This position must comply with all applicable federal, state, and local safety and employment laws.
Key Responsibilities- Interpret detailed blueprints, shop drawings, and material specifications to build custom cabinetry and millwork components.
- Perform precise measuring, cutting, shaping, fitting, and assembling of wood and wood-based products.
- Construct complex custom pieces, prototypes, and one-of-a-kind components.
- Operate woodworking equipment, power tools, and hand tools in a safe and effective manner.
- Work with a variety of materials including hardwoods, veneers, MDF, and laminates.
- Ensure all work meets quality standards and project specifications.
- Troubleshoot and resolve design or construction issues on the shop floor.
- Collaborate with engineers, supervisors, and fellow craftsmen on job planning and execution.
- Maintain clean and organized workstations and follow company safety guidelines.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and cross-training as needed.
- Education:
- High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade school preferred.
- Experience:
- 5+ years of woodworking or cabinetry experience with a focus on custom or specialty work.
- Experience working in a family-owned business or values-driven workplace preferred.
- Skills:
- Advanced knowledge of woodworking techniques, joinery, and finishing practices.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings with a strong attention to detail.
- Skilled in the use of woodworking tools and machines.
- Commitment to craftsmanship, safety, and quality standards.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to changes in design or materials.
- Experience working in a team-oriented, family-owned manufacturing environment is a plus.
This position requires standing, lifting, bending, and working with tools and materials for extended periods. Must be able to lift and move materials up to 75 pounds. Work is performed in a shop environment with exposure to dust, noise, and machinery. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required. Required education and experience:
• High School Degree or GED
• Demonstrates mastery in using the following tools: tape measure, combination square, table saw, portable power miter saw, sliding table saw, radial arm saw, saber saw, portable router, screw pocket machine and pneumatic nailer.
• Knowledge of tapering, scarf joint, jointer, planning for thickness, and single spindle drill press
• Ability to read, interpret and fully understand blueprints, drawings and cut lists. Can anticipate potential issues with shop drawings.
• Proven experience working with particle board, MDF, melamine, plywood, veneer, laminate, fabric, acrylics as well as lightweight materials.
• Ability to generate cut lists
• Must be goal oriented and have the ability to work with others and self-motivated to work alone
• Math skills such as adding, subtracting, multiplication and division
• Possess exceptional problem-solving skills and a high attention to detail
• Ability to contribute their best to producing an exceptional product
