REQUIREMENT
We are seeking a skilled and innovative Design Engineer to join our engineering team as a part-time on-call employee. In this role, you will play a part in developing products and solutions by taking designs from initial concept through detailed engineering and final design stages. Using SolidWorks as the primary CAD platform, you will create, refine, and optimize mechanical designs while collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure manufacturability, functionality, and cost-effectiveness. The ideal candidate is a creative problem-solver with strong technical expertise and a passion for turning ideas into reality.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the design process from concept development through detailed modeling, prototyping support, and final design release.
- Create and maintain 3D models, assemblies, and detailed 2D drawings using SolidWorks.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, and procurement teams to optimize designs for production and cost.
- Develop and revise engineering documentation, including bills of materials (BOMs), technical specifications, and design review materials.
- Support prototype builds, testing, and iterative design improvements based on test results and feedback.
- Participate in design reviews and provide technical input to ensure projects meet performance, safety, and regulatory requirements.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Proficiency in SolidWorks (or equivalent CAD software) with advanced skills in part/assembly modeling, surfacing, and drawing creation.
- Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, materials science, and manufacturing processes (machining, sheet metal, injection molding, etc.).
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical-thinking abilities.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
EDUCATIONAL, CLEARANCE AND CERTIFICATION
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or a related engineering field (Master’s degree preferred).
- 3–7 years of hands-on experience in product design and development, with a proven track record of taking designs from concept to final production release.
- US Citizenship is required.
PHYSICAL/WORKING ENVIRONMENT
- Ability to sit at a computer workstation for extended periods while using design software.
- Occasional need to visit manufacturing floors, labs, or supplier sites (may involve standing, walking, or light lifting up to 25 lbs).
TRAVEL
- Travel is expected to be minimal (0–15%), primarily for occasional supplier visits, trade shows, or prototype testing at external facilities., but if performed will be under the guidelines of Federal Travel Regulations and/or Joint Travel Regulations.
