Job Description
Position Guide and Specification:
Fabrication Shop Welding Inspector
Scope:
Assist the Quality Control Manager in visually inspecting completed welds for acceptance per applicable code requirements and per fabrication drawings for type, size, and length. Inspect welds to confirm entire length is free of defects including porosity, pin holes, cracks, or any other rejectable flaws. Ensure equipment is designed and fabricated in accordance with customer specifications, applicable construction codes, and internal procedures as specified within the company quality manual. Help assure quality production on the shop floor by assisting with inspections and associated QC documentation. Regularly work with Savannah Tank team members and outside inspectors to verify compliance.

Fabrication Shop Welding Inspector
Scope:
Assist the Quality Control Manager in visually inspecting completed welds for acceptance per applicable code requirements and per fabrication drawings for type, size, and length. Inspect welds to confirm entire length is free of defects including porosity, pin holes, cracks, or any other rejectable flaws. Ensure equipment is designed and fabricated in accordance with customer specifications, applicable construction codes, and internal procedures as specified within the company quality manual. Help assure quality production on the shop floor by assisting with inspections and associated QC documentation. Regularly work with Savannah Tank team members and outside inspectors to verify compliance.
Principal Duties:
- With minimal supervision, perform visual inspection of welds completed with the GMAW, FCAW, GTAW or SAW welding processes.
- Perform regular shop floor inspections of completed or in process items. As needed, inspect customer orders at designated check points to ensure technical integrity, dimensional accuracy, and high levels of quality. Coordinate with QC Manager and shop floor leaders to ensure any / all noted defects are corrected prior to testing.
- Assist with maintaining material test reports. Work with purchasing and receiving personnel to keep control of critical material documentation.
- Create and maintain quality records for fabricated equipment including inspection reports, and other quality-related documents.
- Track quality issues on QC checklists and sign off once issues have been resolved.
- Assist receiving department with measuring and verifying critical dimensions on incoming materials. Record key measurements on QC receiving inspection reports.
- Witness pressure testing to verify all components are leak free.
- Perform pre-shipment inspections to ensure all required components are attached to fabricated equipment or packaged separately for shipment.
- Ability to work overtime as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Background, Skills, and Competencies:
- Previous experience in welding inspection (2+ years preferred)
- Working knowledge of NDE testing practices preferred.
- Working knowledge of ASME and API codes for tank and pressure vessel fabrication preferred.
- Working knowledge related to metal fabrication processes and welding techniques preferred.
- Ability to accurately read tape measure, blueprints, and schematics to confirm dimensions, layouts, and thicknesses.
- Ability to visually inspect fabricated metal equipment and identify defects in fabrication including welds.
- Ability to maneuver over, under, through and inside fabricated equipment to perform required inspections.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to listen and communicate clearly with others.
- Analytical skills. Must also be able to work with others to solve quality problems by identifying and addressing root cause.
- Proficient PC skills. Familiarity with MS Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Attention to detail and ability to organize and keep detailed records and work papers.
- Positive attitude and ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
