This part-time academic reference role focuses on delivering high-quality virtual reference and research support to students, faculty, and staff in a fully online environment. You will serve as a key first point of contact for library users, helping them navigate digital resources and develop effective research strategies. The role emphasizes customer service, responsiveness, and the ability to guide diverse learners in an academic setting. You will work closely with library colleagues to maintain consistent service quality and support instructional initiatives. - Provide virtual reference and research assistance to students, faculty, and staff, helping them effectively locate and use academic resources and databases.
- Assess user inquiries to determine information needs and deliver accurate, timely support through chat, email, phone, and other digital channels.
- Offer instructional and technical guidance to improve users’ research skills and confidence in navigating library tools.
- Promote library services, resources, and instructional initiatives to enhance engagement and awareness.
- Troubleshoot basic technical issues related to library platforms and escalate when necessary for resolution.
- Maintain and update instructional content, FAQs, guides, and internal documentation such as tracking tools and shared resources.
- Collaborate with library colleagues, participate in training, and contribute to continuous service improvement efforts.
- Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) or Library Science (MLS) from an ALA-accredited institution (required).
- 1–3 years of experience in academic reference services preferred.
- Strong knowledge of research methods, academic databases, and online information retrieval.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with a strong customer-service orientation.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote, fast-paced, and user-focused environment.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities with attention to accuracy and detail.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools; familiarity with tools such as LibGuides, Kaltura, Captivate, and Snagit is an advantage.
- Comfort working extensively via phone and computer, including headset-based communication.
- Availability to work required non-negotiable hours, including one weekend shift and one weekday evening shift.
- Initiative, adaptability, and ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Competitive hourly compensation ranging from $22.25 to $33.75, depending on experience and qualifications.
- Fully remote work environment (work from home).
