Job Description

Cardiovas Tech/Assist (EGH)

Reports to Manager/Director. Performs diagnostic examinations and therapeutic interventions of the heart and/or blood vessels at the request or direction of a physician. Reviews and records pertinent patient history and supporting clinical data. Performs appropriate clinical procedures according to policies and procedures.

Technical Assistance

  • Transports patients to and from CVR as directed by nursing personnel.
  • Checks equipment for various components and makes needed replacements.
  • Responsible for sheath removal.
  • Keeps storage and supply areas orderly.
  • Performs and maintains the established cleaning procedures as prescribed by CCL, and CVR.
  • Assists with room turnover in CVR.
  • Pulls labs from IV tubings and properly labels and sends to Lab.
  • Receives in TEE and PM post op patients and does required VS checks and charts appropriately.
  • Inputs orders.

Supply Inventory/Unit Maintenance

  • Monitors and orders replacement of stock paper supplies and materials according to predetermined levels.
  • Assures that needed stock supply items for the unit are located in proper places on unit for easy access to physicians and staff.
  • Performs unit cleaning activities as directed.
  • Captures charges per unit routine as needed.
  • Checks appropriate equipment using safe techniques.
  • Decontaminates special instrumentation following policy and procedure.
  • Follows correct procedures to assure the pick-up and return of supplies and instruments to CPD.
  • Performs chart audits.

Patient Prep/ADL

  • Demonstrates the ability to prepare patient for cardiovascular procedure by clipping, marking pulses, and showering patient, while maintaining patient privacy.
  • Demonstrates the ability to complete patient hook up to Marquette monitoring system, sat monitor and non-invasive system, as needed.
  • Provides safe patient environment based on policy and procedures.
  • Delivers patient care as directed by nursing including anchoring Foley, cath checks, collects I and O's and documents.
  • Obtains heights and weights and documents in the Electronic Record.
  • Moves and positions patients under the direction of the RN.
  • Inserts and removes Foley catheters.
  • Removes IVs.

Communication

  • Works in collaboration with the entire heart center, to include OHS, CCL, and CCC.
  • Responds promptly to patient, family, physician, and staff needs.
  • Performs all duties in an independent manner with little or no direct supervision.
  • Performs proficiently in basic EKG interpretation and reports changes appropriately.
  • Observes and recognizes patient changes and needs and reports to appropriate staff member.
  • Gives accurate report of daily assignments to RN.
  • Attends 50% of unit meetings and is responsible for 100% of information shared at remainder of meetings.
  • Maintains CPR and ACLS.
  • Ensures that patient and chart is prepared for procedures.
  • Contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department
  • Completes other job-related duties and projects as assigned.

  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience

  • The knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a High School Diploma or equivalent. Must maintain current CPR certification. Certification from an approved Nurse Aid Course/Unit Secretary Course. Previous experience with transcribing orders and medical terminology is preferred. Patient care experience in acute or chronic nursing facility preferable, however, on-the-job training may occur.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Current knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge: BLS.
  • EKG/Cardiology background.
  • Be able to identify abnormal EKG patterns.
  • Must have reassuring and attentive personality characteristics.
  • Must have strong cardiac background.
  • Must have complete understanding of cardiac anatomy, pressures, normal and abnormal EKG rhythms.
  • Must be able to focus on duties in spite of distractions and pressure.
  • Baseline computer skills.
  • Must be able to help analyze data and produce data accurately.

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to focus on procedure despite distractions in monitor room.
  • Must be able to work closely and well with co-workers.
  • Possible exposure to blood borne pathogens.

Physical Demands

  • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts/wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position/lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
