Respiratory Therapy Manager

Department: Respiratory Therapy, EEG and EMG
Location: Froedtert South – Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital and/or affiliated facilities

Position Summary

The Respiratory Therapy Manager is responsible for the operational, clinical, financial, and personnel management of the Respiratory Therapy Department, which includes EEG and EMG services. This position provides leadership to ensure the delivery of high-quality, safe, patient-centered respiratory care services in compliance with organizational standards, regulatory requirements, and evidence-based practices. The Manager collaborates with physicians, nursing leadership, and interdisciplinary teams to support organizational goals, quality outcomes, patient satisfaction, and strategic initiatives. Responsibilities typically include oversight of staffing, budgeting, quality improvement, policy development, equipment management, and regulatory compliance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership and Operations

  • Direct and oversee the daily operations of the Respiratory Therapy, EMG and EEG Departments on a 24-hour basis.
  • Develop departmental goals, objectives, and performance metrics aligned with Froedtert South strategic initiatives.
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels and appropriate skill mix to meet patient care needs.
  • Monitor departmental productivity, patient volumes, and staffing efficiency.
  • Serve as a resource and liaison between staff, physicians, nursing leadership, and administration.
  • Participate in organizational committees, multidisciplinary teams, and leadership meetings.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, professionalism, engagement, and continuous improvement.

Clinical Excellence and Quality

  • Ensure services are provided in accordance with physician orders, evidence-based practice, accreditation standards, and state and federal regulations.
  • Monitor clinical outcomes and quality indicators and implement corrective actions when necessary.
  • Lead quality improvement, patient safety, infection prevention, and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with medical staff to develop, implement, and revise respiratory care and neurodiagnostic protocols and clinical pathways.
  • Promote patient-centered care and exceptional patient experiences.

Personnel Management

  • Recruit, hire, orient, train, supervise, and evaluate respiratory therapy, EEG and EMG personnel.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide coaching, mentoring, and corrective action as necessary.
  • Develop succession plans and promote professional growth opportunities for staff.
  • Manage scheduling, attendance, productivity, and payroll functions.
  • Ensure competency assessments and annual education requirements are completed.

Financial Management

  • Develop and manage departmental operating and capital budgets.
  • Monitor expenditures and identify opportunities for cost containment and operational efficiencies.
  • Participate in capital planning and equipment acquisition processes.
  • Ensure appropriate utilization and maintenance of respiratory care equipment and supplies.
  • Analyze departmental financial and productivity reports and implement improvement strategies.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with standards established by:
    • Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services
    • Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)
    • The Joint Commission
    • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
    • National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)
    • American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC)
  • Maintain departmental policies, procedures, and documentation requirements.
  • Participate in accreditation surveys and regulatory inspections.

Equipment and Technology Management

  • Oversee the selection, maintenance, calibration, and replacement of respiratory care equipment.
  • Ensure staff competency with new technologies and equipment.
  • Collaborate with Biomedical Engineering and Supply Chain departments regarding equipment management.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend implementation when appropriate.

Education and Professional Development

  • Promote continuing education and professional certification among respiratory therapy staff.
  • Coordinate student clinical experiences and educational affiliations.
  • Maintain knowledge of current respiratory care practices, regulatory requirements, and industry trends.
  • Support research, evidence-based practice initiatives, and professional advancement opportunities.

Qualifications

Education

  • Associate degree in Respiratory Therapy required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Therapy, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or related field required or obtained within a specified period of employment.
  • Master’s degree preferred.

Licensure and Certification

  • Current Wisconsin Respiratory Care Practitioner License required.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible respiratory therapy experience required.
  • Minimum three (3) years of supervisory, lead, or management experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in hospital-based acute care respiratory services required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of respiratory care principles, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage change and lead teams through organizational initiatives.
  • Knowledge of budgeting, staffing, productivity management, and financial reporting.
  • Ability to analyze data and implement operational improvements.
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Proficiency in electronic medical records and healthcare information systems.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and move throughout patient care areas.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment and supplies up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to respond and assist when needed to emergency situations throughout the facility.
  • Ability to work in an environment with exposure to infectious diseases and other healthcare-related hazards.

Working Conditions

  • Hospital and clinical care environment.
  • Occasional off-shift, weekend, holiday, and on-call responsibilities.
  • Frequent interaction with patients, physicians, staff, and external agencies.
