Maintenance Technician / Handyman
Department: Maintenance
Reports To: Floor Manager
Job Type: Full-Time
Work Schedule: 5 days a week (8-hour shifts), including weekends
Position Summary
Above and Beyond Care Services Inc. is seeking a reliable, skilled, and versatile Maintenance Technician / Handyman to support the upkeep, repair, and improvement of Serenity Place and all community homes under our care. This hands-on role ensures facilities are safe, functional, and visually appealing for residents, staff, and visitors.
The Maintenance Technician / Handyman performs general repairs, preventative maintenance, seasonal duties, and minor projects, while assisting the Floor Manager with inspections and coordination of external contractors.
Key Responsibilities
General Maintenance & Repairs
- Perform routine repairs and maintenance, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and fixture installation.
- Troubleshoot and resolve minor facility issues in a timely manner.
- Assist with small renovation or improvement projects, including shelving, cabinetry, and fixture upgrades.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and supplies in good working order.
Property & Facility Care
- Conduct inspections of mechanical systems, buildings, grounds, and common areas to identify hazards or maintenance needs.
- Report significant repair needs or safety hazards to the Floor Manager.
- Ensure facilities remain safe, accessible, and visually well-kept.
Landscaping & Seasonal Duties
- Mow lawns, trim shrubs, maintain flower beds, and remove debris to enhance property appearance.
- Water trees, grass, and plants during warmer months.
- Perform snow removal, de-icing, and winter preparations to ensure safety.
- Prepare buildings for seasonal changes, including ventilation, insulation, and pest control as required.
Equipment & Inventory Management
- Maintain inventory of maintenance supplies, parts, and tools.
- Order, receive, and track materials to ensure jobs are completed efficiently.
- Perform basic maintenance on vehicles and powered equipment (lawnmowers, snow blowers, generators).
Safety, Compliance & Emergency Support
- Follow all company and regulatory safety procedures, including PPE use.
- Assist with basic fire extinguisher inspections, emergency lighting checks, and safety audits.
- Respond promptly to urgent maintenance requests (e.g., leaks, electrical outages, broken locks) and secure areas until resolved.
Contractor & Vendor Support
- Prepare work areas for specialized contractors and assist as needed during repairs or installations.
- Ensure areas are cleaned and safe after contractor work.
Record-Keeping & Reporting
- Document completed maintenance tasks, repairs, and inspections.
- Report recurring issues or major repair needs to management for scheduling or budgeting.
Resident & Staff Support
- Provide minor adjustments, lockout assistance, or equipment help to residents and staff.
- Maintain professional and friendly interactions while performing maintenance duties.
Qualifications and Skills
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Trade certifications (plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or carpentry) are an asset.
Experience:
- Prior experience in maintenance, handyman work, or a similar role preferred.
- Familiarity with tools, equipment, and general repair techniques.
Skills & Attributes:
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Physical stamina to perform manual labor, including lifting, bending, and standing for long periods.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Energetic, reliable, and self-motivated, with the ability to work independently.
Working Conditions
- Work may involve exposure to varying weather conditions.
- Role requires manual labor, including handling tools, climbing ladders, and lifting heavy objects.
- Must be available to work weekends as part of the regular schedule.
Licensing / Certification Requirements (Preferred)
- WHMIS and Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) certification.
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Trade-specific certifications considered an asset (plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry).
