We're currently seeking a passionate and skilled Prototype Machinist to join our team and contribute to our mission of delivering high-quality, engineered solutions to our customers worldwide. In this role you will be responsible for producing high-quality prototype and development components that support new product development, process validation, and manufacturing innovation. This hands-on role requires expertise in traditional tool room machining methods as well as CNC machining technologies. The ideal candidate is a versatile machinist capable of transforming engineering concepts, drawings, and CAD models into precision prototype parts using manual and CNC equipment.

The Prototype Machinist will work closely with Engineering, Product Development, and Manufacturing teams to fabricate one-off and low-volume components while maintaining exceptional attention to detail, quality, and delivery requirements. This position requires strong problem-solving skills, a high level of craftsmanship, and the aptitude to learn and support emerging manufacturing technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Manufacture precision prototype and development components from engineering drawings, sketches, CAD models, or verbal instructions.
  • Set up and operate traditional tool room equipment, including: Manual lathes, Bridgeport mills, Surface grinders, Drill presses, Other manual machining equipment
  • Set up and operate CNC machining equipment, including CNC mills, CNC lathes, and Wire EDM equipment.
  • Program, edit, and optimize CNC programs as required to support prototype and low-volume production needs.
  • Collaborate with engineers and designers to develop practical machining solutions for complex prototype parts.
  • Select appropriate tooling, workholding, materials, and machining processes to produce parts efficiently and accurately.
  • Perform first-piece inspections and verify dimensional compliance using precision measuring equipment.
  • Interpret and work from engineering drawings, GD&T, CAD data, and specifications.
  • Troubleshoot machining, tooling, and programming issues to ensure successful completion of prototype projects.
  • Maintain tooling, fixtures, and equipment in proper working condition.
  • Perform machine maintenance and complete required documentation.
  • Maintain accurate records of prototype builds, process improvements, and machining methods.
  • Support assembly, fit-up, and modification of prototype components when required.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in accordance with company safety procedures.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to learn and operate new manufacturing technologies, equipment, and processes as the business evolves.
  • Support special projects and perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED required; technical or trade school training in Machining Technology preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a prototype, tool room, model shop, or precision machining environment preferred.
  • Strong experience operating manual machine equipment, including lathes, Bridgeport mills, surface grinders, and related tool room machinery.
  • Experience setting up and operating CNC mills and CNC lathes.
  • Experience with Wire EDM and/or sinker EDM preferred.
  • Ability to create, modify, and troubleshoot CNC programs.
  • Strong understanding of machining principles, cutting tools, feeds and speeds, materials, and work holding techniques.
  • Proficient in reading blueprints, engineering drawings, and GD&T specifications.
  • Skilled in the use of precision measuring instruments, including micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, height gauges, and optical inspection equipment.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while effectively collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to learn new manufacturing technologies and processes.
  • Experience in support of engineering and product development activities is preferred.

This position is at our Fairfield, NJ location.

Pay Range: $32.00 per hour - $36.00 per hour

The base salary for this role will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, experience, and internal consistency.
