Job Overview:
The Phlebotomist performs safe, accurate venipunctures and capillary finger sticks to collect high-quality diagnostic specimens from patients and blood donors. Operating within strict safety and infection control frameworks, this role processes specimens, manages essential patient registration data entry inside the Laboratory Information System (LIS), and coordinates courier logistics to ensure a seamless chain of custody. The Phlebotomist serves as a key frontline representative, delivering reassuring patient care, executing immediate service recovery when necessary, and upholding the stringent compliance standards mandated by state and federal regulatory bodies.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Demonstrated manual dexterity and precision necessary to perform safe, compliant donor and diagnostic draw procedures.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively verify patient identities and support clinical care teams.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, bend to attend to donors, and occasionally lift or push mobile equipment and supplies.
  • Strict commitment to maintaining ultimate patient confidentiality, information security, and HIPAA regulations.

Preferred:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of general phlebotomy or blood donor collection experience.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) / CPR certification.
  • Active certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT).
  • Prior experience navigating a Laboratory Information System (LIS) for patient registration and order entries.

  • Per Diem / Evening

Essential Functions:

  • Performs precise venipunctures and finger sticks following standard operating protocols to collect, process, and prepare biological specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Executes strict patient identification verification workflows and accurately labels all specimen tubes and collection containers immediately at the bedside or draw station.
  • Enters patient demographic data, clinical registration details, and specific test requests directly into the LIS computer system with high accuracy.
  • Generates delivery manifests and oversees outreach courier pick-ups, verifying data to guarantee the prompt and secure transport of specimens to the testing laboratory.
  • Receives incoming outreach specimens into the LIS system and safely distributes materials to the appropriate laboratory sub-departments.
  • Monitored patients closely throughout collection procedures for unexpected physiological reactions and initiates immediate response protocols during emergency situations.
  • Interacts with outreach physicians, medical assistants, and laboratory staff to answer workflow inquiries and provide customer service support regarding general testing procedures.
  • Maintains a clean, structured, and fully stocked phlebotomy workstation in absolute compliance with universal precautions, Hazcom, and OSHA safety guidelines.
  • Delivers peer training on outreach phlebotomy techniques and LIS data protocols under the clinical direction of the Phlebotomy Team Leader.
  • Ensures all clinical actions align with corporate compliance guidelines to support successful, ongoing accreditation reviews by the NJDOH, CLIA, AABB, and FDA.
