About This Position

Position Summary Under general direction, the Fire Captain supervises firefighting companies in the suppression of fires, providing emergency medical services to the community, and participates in fire prevention and public education activities. This position oversees daily operations of the fire station including managing equipment inventories, ensuring apparatus are cleared for service, providing training to personnel, and related work as required. This position also coordinates the scheduling of personnel, station maintenance activities, and assists with the administration of City policies for the fire department.

  • Pay Rate

  • Hourly Rate: $25.79 - $31.35 (non-exempt).
  • Annual Salary Based on a 2,912 Hour Work Year: $75,101.50 to $91,291.20.
  • Twelve Hour Shifts are assigned the same hourly rate as described above.
  • Work Schedules

  • Depending on the needs of the department, work schedules may start out as a twelve (12) hour shift variation until adequate staffing can be obtained to transition to a 48/96 schedule. The 48/96 work scheduled is based on a work year of 2,912 hours.

  • Minimum Qualifications

    Possession of, or ability to obtain within six (6) months from appointment, a valid Class B California Commercial Driver’s License with air brake and tanker endorsement. Possession of a valid Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certificate certified by the National Registry. Completion of a State Fire Marshal Firefighter 1 and 2 Certificate.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Equivalent to the completion of a BS or BA degree in fire administration, or a related field. Completion of California State Board of Fire Services Fire Officer Series.

    Examination Procedure

  • Oral board exam
  • Criminal History and Background Check: Applicants will be fingerprinted for the purpose of a search of local, state and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record
