Job Description

About the Role:

As a Transit Mechanic, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of public transportation vehicles. Your primary focus will be on diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining buses and other transit vehicles to meet stringent safety and operational standards. This position requires a thorough understanding of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems specific to transit vehicles, enabling you to perform preventative maintenance and emergency repairs effectively. You will collaborate closely with other maintenance staff and transit operations teams to minimize vehicle downtime and support uninterrupted transit service. Ultimately, your expertise will contribute to providing safe and dependable transportation for the community.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a recognized diesel mechanic or automotive technician training program.
  • At least 2 years of experience in vehicle maintenance, preferably with heavy-duty or transit vehicles.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic reports.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), particularly in medium/heavy truck or transit bus specialties.
  • Experience working with hybrid or electric transit vehicles.
  • Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger endorsement.
  • Strong knowledge of safety regulations and compliance standards specific to public transit.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on transit vehicles to identify and address potential issues before they lead to breakdowns.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems using specialized tools and diagnostic equipment.
  • Repair or replace defective parts, including engines, brakes, transmissions, and suspension systems, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repair work performed, including parts used and labor hours.
  • Collaborate with team members to prioritize repairs and manage workflow to meet operational schedules.
  • Ensure all work complies with federal, state, and local safety and environmental regulations.
  • Participate in ongoing training to stay current with new technologies and maintenance techniques in transit vehicle systems.

The required skills enable the Transit Mechanic to effectively diagnose and repair complex vehicle systems, ensuring transit vehicles operate safely and efficiently. Proficiency in reading technical manuals and schematics allows for accurate troubleshooting and repair planning.
