Job Description
About MICA Steelworks
MICA Steelworks is a North Texas steel fabrication company with plants in Rhome, Haltom City, Kaufman (including our galvanizing operation), and Euless. Every plant starts the day with a toolbox talk, and our MICA 1-2-3 program asks everyone to take care of themselves, their tools, and their work. We are growing our EHS team and want someone who will help us keep building a strong safety culture on the plant floor.
The Role
The EHS Coordinator is the EHS Manager's presence on the plant floor. You will keep people safe, keep our OSHA and environmental obligations on schedule, and keep the records that prove it. This is a hands-on role: you will spend most of your day in the plants working with supervisors, leads, and crews, not behind a desk.
You will have stop-work authority and the backing of leadership to use it. New hires follow a structured 90-day training plan with a dedicated trainer and 30/60/90-day check-ins, so you will learn our systems, sites, and programs the right way before working on your own.
What You Will Do Daily
• Walk the floor at your assigned site(s), identify unsafe conditions and behaviors, and get hazards corrected on the spot or tracked to closure
• Support daily toolbox talks and make sure training records are complete
• Collect and review daily inspection logs for forklifts, overhead cranes, and chains and slings (plus acid tank logs at our Kaufman galvanizing plant)
• Respond to incidents, injuries, near misses, and property or vehicle damage: secure the scene, gather witness statements, and complete initial reports the same shift
Every week and monthly
• Track open corrective actions with owners and due dates, and follow up until they are closed
• Complete monthly facility safety inspections at each assigned site
• Verify fire extinguisher, eyewash, first aid, and AED service across sites
• Prepare data and materials for the monthly Safety Committee meeting and the weekly EHS leadership briefing
• Review incident data for trends and bring recurring issues to the EHS Manager early
Quarterly and annually
• Keep the EHS compliance calendar (dashboard) current for every site so nothing is missed
• Help prepare regulatory filing packages for EHS Manager review, including Tier II, Annual Waste Summary, Water Use Survey, Stormwater Benchmark, Pollution Prevention progress reports, and Form R
• Support OSHA 300/300A recordkeeping and posting with HR
• Coordinate floor sweep sampling, audiometric testing, and air (exposure) monitoring
• Plan and run fire, tornado, and spill drills at every site
• Track annual required training to 100% completion
• Support insurance carrier risk-control recommendations and annual equipment inspections
As needed
• Review new chemicals, new machines, and process changes before startup (SDS, training, and procedure needs)
• Draft and update SOPs, forms, and toolbox talks
• Deliver safety training, including forklift and new-employee orientation topics
What We Are Looking For
Required
• 2+ years of EHS or safety experience in manufacturing, fabrication, or another industrial setting
• Working knowledge of OSHA General Industry standards (29 CFR 1910) and OSHA recordkeeping (29 CFR 1904)
• Comfortable leading toolbox talks and training in front of production crews
• Strong organization and follow-through; you keep accurate records and meet deadlines
• Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Teams/SharePoint
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel between North Texas sites
• Ability to work overtime and weekends as needed
Preferred
• OSHA 30-Hour General Industry (or willingness to obtain)
• First Aid / CPR / AED certification
• Forklift (powered industrial truck) trainer/evaluator experience; overhead crane and rigging knowledge
• Experience with TCEQ and EPA reporting (STEERS, CDX/NetDMR), Tier II, stormwater, or hazardous waste
• Experience in steel fabrication or galvanizing
• Bilingual in English and Spanish
• Degree or coursework in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field
Benefits
• Competitive pay: $25 – $30 per hour, based on experience
• Plenty of overtime available
• Health insurance
• 401(k) with company contributions
• Paid time off
• Paid holidays
• Annual bonus
• Structured 90-day training program with a dedicated trainer
• Paid safety certifications and training
• Growth opportunity on an expanding EHS team
Work Environment
• Work is performed mainly on the plant floor in an active steel fabrication environment with noise, heat, overhead cranes, and forklift traffic
• Required PPE includes safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toe boots, and other PPE as the task requires
• Must be able to walk and stand for long periods, climb stairs and ladders, and lift up to 50 lbs
